Music : Love's Been Rough on Me [CASSETTE]
I like this album, despite the fact that a few of the tracks have a slight 'country' feel to them. The title track, well, Etta sings it like it's true, and having read her autobiography I'm sure it is. 'Love It Or Leave It Alone' is a funky, mid-tempo number that I love, while her version of 'I've Been Loving You Too Long' is as good as any I've heard, including Otis Redding's. Etta's voice is in fine form, much of the album has at least a good degree of her trademark passion (unlike a number of her recent albums), and while this isn't my favourite Ftta James CD, it IS one of the better ones, that's for sure, despite the fact that Etta herself has said she doesn't like it, apparently. I do.

164.Force of Nature [CASSETTE] by: Koko Taylor

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Force of Nature [CASSETTE]
Koko Taylor's best record for many years, "Force Of Nature" is over an hour of tough blues, soul and R&B, and Koko Taylor at 63 has lost none of the power of her huge, growling voice.
She reinterprets Toussaint McCall's tender soul lament "Nothing Takes the Place of You" and Big Mama Thornton's "Hound Dog", and Tina Turner has nothing on Koko Taylor on Ike's R&B chestnut "If I Can't Be First".

There is plenty of genuine blues here as well, including a really good "Born Under A Bad Sign" with guest star Buddy Guy, and harpist Carey Bell guests on the excellent opening track "Mother Nature". The self-penned "63 Year Old Mama" is a powerful slow grind with some great piano playing and an awesome vocal performance by Taylor, and ... Read More:

Music : Seven Year Itch [CASSETTE]
This is a gem of an album. Recorded in the 1980s, a mature Etta delivers the goods backed by Nashville session musicians (including the usual suspects such as Steve Cropper and Jim Horn) who get it absolutely right. This is great R&B: songs of love and lust, in turns sexy, sassy and sad. And quite simply, a track like "Damn your eyes" is sheer perfection: it doesn't get any better than this. If you love R&B this CD has to be in your collection. If you don't, this would be a great place to start finding out why some of us do! Oh yeah, come to mama!

If you like this CD, try and catch a gig by Taka Boom. She's the younger sister of disco diva Chaka Khan, and lives and works in the UK. Taka is amazingly sexy, a phenomenal singer - and ... Read More:
