Music : Seven Year Itch
This is a gem of an album. Recorded in the 1980s, a mature Etta delivers the goods backed by Nashville session musicians (including the usual suspects such as Steve Cropper and Jim Horn) who get it absolutely right. This is great R&B: songs of love and lust, in turns sexy, sassy and sad. And quite simply, a track like "Damn your eyes" is sheer perfection: it doesn't get any better than this. If you love R&B this CD has to be in your collection. If you don't, this would be a great place to start finding out why some of us do! Oh yeah, come to mama!

If you like this CD, try and catch a gig by Taka Boom. She's the younger sister of disco diva Chaka Khan, and lives and works in the UK. Taka is amazingly sexy, a phenomenal singer - and ... Read More:

24.I Got What It Takes by: Koko Taylor

One of Chicago blues queen Koko Taylor's very best albums, "I Got What It Takes" is a superb slice of muscular, gritty electric blues.
Koko Taylor is backed by a number of tremendous musicians, Magic Joe Young, Sammy Lawhorn, and saxist Abe Locke among them, and Bruce Iglauer's production is crisp without being slick. Taylor's voice is both clear, expressive and powerful, and her renditions of "Mama, He Treats Your Daughter Mean", "Trying To Make A Living", "Big Boss Man", "Happy Home", and "I Got What It Takes" are among the best, toughest, most genuine Chicago blues you'll ever hear.

Mildred Bailey, initially heavily influenced by Bessie Smith and Ethel Waters, chose not to follow either the blues style or the melodic ballad method they each had made their own. In fact, when Mildred recorded her first songs in 1929, she could claim to be the first successful white female jazz vocalist, having taken a similar route as Billie Holiday who she admired. However, their voices were dissimilar, with Mildred’s having a high bell-like quality enabled by perfect diction, and the ability to interpret lyrics in a believable way which heightened any song’s sentiments. Both she and Billie had careers which were beset with personal problems and resulted in their early deaths – in Mildred’s case at age 48. Compared with ... Read More:
