Music : Mystery Lady
Being a big Billie Holiday fan, I admit to listening to this CD with some skepticism. There have been many Billie tribute CD's over the years, few ever equalling her soulfulness and artistry, but after listening to this CD, Etta really opens my eyes and ears. I wouldn't expect someone primarily known as a soul-R&B singer to nail down these songs in an entirely new blues-soul context yet retaining its jazz structure. She doesn't really have Billie's fragility of phrasing, but shows the same X factor of emotional and gut-wrenching elements in her interpretations, though on a grander scale. She adds some of her ever-present feistiness as well, which of course Billie never had, but it never detracts from the jazz feel of this ... Read More:

38.The Chess Box by: Etta James
August 14, 2000
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : The Chess Box
This box set contains songs she recorded with Chess over a long period, from her early smash hits such as 'At Last' through to her tougher, heroin inspired material such as 'All The Way Down'. Many of the better tracks only seem to be available on this CD. Standout tracks include 'I'd Rather Go Blind', "Down So Low', "God's Song" 'Let's Burn Down The Cornfield', ' Out on The Street Again' and many more. I'd recommend this set to anyone wanting the Chess material, but do remember she also did great stuff on several albums for Island, and now has her own label. But this set contains many of the classics, and is very listenable. It's worth it.

This album features several different backing bands. The first six tracks are with Buddy Guy, with Big Walter Horton on tracks 2 & 5. Tracks 7 & 8 are with Mississippi Fred McDowell, 9-14 are with the Muddy Waters band - yes, Muddy is just a backing musician here! - while the last two are with Edward 'Bee' Houston. Now I have to admit I'm not really a fan of Buddy Guy, and his tracks are the weakest on this CD, in my opinion, but they're still perfectly listenable. As for the rest, they're all absoluely first rate, more than enough for me to give this album a five-star rating. This is a great album, with a variety of styles, but still sufficiently homogenous to listen to it all the way through.
Thankfully Big Mama was still in good ... Read More:
