In the style of "Time after Time", Etta James sings these Jazz standards with such feeling it is hard not to be moved or inspired by them. She refrains from going over the top and does not let any song become too bluesy, resulting in an accomplished Jazz CD. Highlights are "Don't let the sun catch you crying" and "My man", where raw emotion mixes with technical ability and a great voice to be breathtaking. It may not be traditional Etta, but it is a joy.

Music : Gospel Favourites
God this makes you feel good-its not the deep soul of Etta James but radio friendly, white sounding and you could fall inside it.
First made in the late 80s by K TEL its Etta James for the masses-famous Gospel songs done with a socking great Johnny Rivers/Trini Lopez backing.
While it was Ray Charles first who secularized black music-leading to dozens of hymns being remade in the 60s-Etta James was only minimally involved and wasn't a writer anyway but it took 3 to come up with Something's got a hold on me and of the songs here theres one called In My Father's House-how did this one escape being turned into something like "in Daddy Gs house theres a rockin'band"-imagine what Gary US Bonds could have done with that-that actual melody to this ... 45.Anthology by: Janis Joplin

Music : Anthology
This collection includes the best racks from Kozmic Blues, Cheap Thrills and Pearl, plus live versions of Down On Me, Bye Bye Baby, Get It While You Can and Ball And Chain, a song first made famous by Big Mama Thornton. My personal favorites include Piece Of My Heart, a juggernaut of a song with Big Brother & The Holding Company, To Love Somebody, her beautiful rendition of the Bee Gees song, Cry Baby, Move Over, Me And Bobby McGee – these three from her masterpiece Pearl. It is interesting to trace the change in her vocal style from Kozmic Blues, through the Big Brother period and finally to Pearl where she found her true voice and to contrast the studio recordings with the raucous live versions of familiar songs. This album would suffice for ... Read More:

48.Let's Roll by: Etta James

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Let's Roll
Imagine... the Rolling Stones and Tina Turner at their very best... then you get the one and only legendary Etta James! Etta's classic 2003 release Let's Roll confirmed her true status as 'Matriarch of the Blues' which she proudly recorded with her sons Donto playing drums and Sametto on bass. Etta has been thrilling audiences for the last 50 years ever since she recorded the R&B hit 'Roll with me Henry' back in 1955, so it's no wonder that she was inducted into the 'Rock & Roll Hall of Fame' in 1993. Etta's voice tells you she is a survivor from all that life can throw at you as endorsed in her autobiography 'Rage To Survive'.

'Somebody To Love' has Etta delivering the classic line... 'Love ain't no good 'til you give it away'! 'Strongest ... Read More:

50.Pearl by: Janis Joplin

Music : Pearl
For me Janis's albums (not bootlegs or compliations) split down the middle - those with Big Bro & the Holding Co and those without. Those with are the better, the happier, where she felt part of something. They're guitar based psychedelic rock at its best. They're raw, earthy, exciting, naive and bursting with energy. Cheap Thrills is best (live) and the studio Big Brother & the Holding Company an interesting, quirky innocent debut album.
Those without, Pearl & Kozmic Blues, are the unhappy Janis, full production, no band, orchestrated, brass and keyboard albums. They lack the passion and excitement and raw energy. I still play them often and love them dearly but they're not the best. The spark has gone. That said, Pearl is the better of the ... Read More:
