Having no great expectations of any Heep album after Magician's Birthday I was really surprised by this one. With the exception of the disappointing title track the songs get better and better as the album progresses, culminating in the atmospheric Rolling On and the up tempo and highly memorable Sympathy. I have been really pleased with this purchase and may be forced to sample later material in the hope of finding a similar gem.

It's a bit softer than their other albums, and the songs aren't as fun to listen to either. And the lyrics can be weak at points, but other songs (Guilded C*nt, Nymphetamine Fix, English Fire) make up for that. However, overall, it is not as good as their previous albums or their newest ones. If you're just getting into Cradle, though, this might be a good one to get if you're not accustomed to really thrashy stuff. Then, after this, you can get Thornography and work your way back from Damnation & A Day. So...yeah. This is a good introduction to metal and COF, but if you're already a fan of both, it's got it's strong points and it's (very) weak points...

The first Cradle of Filth album I bought was 'Midian', which I was very impressed by. After reading some reviews I decided to buy 'Cruelty And The Beast'. However, due to a mix up I received this album instead. So I thought "What the hell? I might aswell listen to it!". Little did I know that my taste in music would be changed so dramatically by this album.

The first thing I noticed was the contrast between the production on this album and on Midian. The "wall of sound" on Midian is replaced by a sparse sonic landscape. The guitars are fuzzy, the bass cold, the drums tight; all backed by keyboards, brimming with elegance. The vocals Dani produced on this album are raw, more true to the 'black metal' that was beginning to surface ... Read More:

It is often said that sequels can never match the originals. And they are right, sequels don't measure up - in their minds -, in their little world where there is no such things as KISS sequels are usually rubbish. But for the rest of us it is different, for those who have this album understand that what happened before can always be done just as well if not better. Which of the first two Alive albums was better is quite frankly irrelevant. Both are such pioneering live albums and such brilliant records that all rock fans should own both.

Recorded in 1977 in LA, Alive II is blood and guts rock and roll from start to finish. The main standouts are Detroit Rock City, the ever brilliant Love Gun, Calling Dr Love, Shock Me, I Want You, ... Read More:

This is a great album.Alice Cooper has made quite a few albums that could be classed as great but this is him(and his band)at his very peak. There are many tracks that stnd out including 'Hello Hooray','No More Mister Nice Guy','Billion Dollar Babies' and the fantastic 'Elected'.

I can honestly say that this album sounds as good today as it did when it was originally released.A true classic, brilliantly produced by Bob Ezrin and absolutely essential.

Despite keeping an eye open for a Heep compilation that contained both 'July Morning' and 'Sweet Lorraine' for some years I still faltered when I saw this on Amazon. The logo, the derivative cover art... and then, having taken the plunge, my suspicions were further aroused when seeing that the same photo of the band is run several times. Here's the classic Heep line-up in colour; here's the same picture, only smaller and in black and white; here it is again and look! The Heep are now silhouttes and reversed. Bitter experience has taught me that CD's with sleeves so cheaply produced are often "rare" live versions of beloved songs or, worse, re-recorded.

Happily the old adage about books and covers applies. At less than four bucks this is value for money ... Read More:

It was 1972 - I think - those days are all a bit hazy. Anyway, my mate asked if I wanted to get tickets for Alice Cooper and I replied as above. All of the schlock horror hadn't been visited on the UK yet so I was in complete ignorance. "It's not a woman you pillock - it's a band." he explaiined. This, the first ever British gig, would be in Birmingham. I wasn't too enthusiastic and asked what they were about. He explained that they had the longest hair of any rock band ever. That was good enough for me so we went. We went but the gig was postponed for four days 'cause they were delayed in immigration as undesirables. My new girlfriend said that they took a live snake on stage! The anticipation grew notorious.

It was a truly mind blowing gig as they pulled ... Read More:

And for me that's a very good thing. I'll be honest, heavy rock isn't my thing, so I do feel a little bit strange doing a Deep Purple review. The thing is, if you didn't know 'The Book of Teliesyn' was by DP there's little chance you'd guess. It's one of those wonderful albums that lies right on the cusp between psychedelic and progressive rock. Opening with the echo-drenched 'Listen Learn Read On' with it's eastern-style guitar riff and cosmic lyrics, you'd be forgiven for thinking you're listening to an Electric Prunes album, or perhaps early Pink Floyd. 'Wring That Neck' and 'Kentucky Woman' quickly take you into more bluesy territory, but the overall impression is still of some pretty weird, most likely US West Coast psychedelic. Indeed, DP were a lot more popular in the States at this point ... Read More:

I cant speak for every Thunder fan but I think that this one of the best albums the band has made. The reason it's so good is because the quality of the material is just as good as the previous Thunder albums Backstreet Symphony,& Laughing on Judgement Day. Luke Morley shines on Behind Closed Doors because he is not only an good guitarist but he is a excellent songwriter. Songs like Future Train, Till The River Runs Dry (which is a true story written about domestic abuse) Too Scared To Live & Preaching From A Chair are superbly written. There are so many good songs on here such as the live favourite River Of Pain, Ball & Chain, Stand Up, I'll Be Waiting, & Castles In The Sand. The only weakness on this album for me is Fly On The Wall which sounds incredibly naff, but apart from that ... Read More:

As I remember, this album came out at the start of the summer school holidays of 1972, so didn't cause the classroom revolution that it might have. (We'd have to wait for 'The Wall' for that.) A 13-year-old at the time, I bought the cassette version, because all I had was a mono Philips cassette 'corder'. Even at its maximum volume of '5', I could barely hear it the other side of my bedroom, so my personal rebellion went largely unnoticed.

I never saw Alice in concert, but you could tell from the start that this was theatre rock par excellence. For me, Alice sits somewhere between Arthur Brown (both his Crazy World and Kingdom Come incarnations) and the markedly inferior Alex Harvey Band. Allegedly the Alice Cooper band could barely play its instruments before coming together for whichever ... Read More:
