Wire has recently re-released re-mastered versions of their first three hot streak albums "Pink Flag". "Chairs Missing" and "154", three albums of such fractured brilliance that the band promptly split up, claiming their creative juices had run dry. Subsequent reformations have put that theory to the sword but this was a band who was post punk before punk had a post, jumping from the angular edgy bursts of "Pink Flag" to the artier electronic "Chairs Missing" to the even more abstract surfaces of "154" while barely pausing for breath.
Anyone should really ascribe to owning all those albums but for those lacking the finances this is a sound option with is budget price and 31 tracks. As is always the case with these kinds of compilations ... Read More:

"The Very Best of Cockney Rejects" is a fine compilation of a fine band - and it's good how these tunes have stood the test of time, especially "Flares & Slippers", "I'm Not A Fool", and "The Power & The Glory".

All class stuff. But I've got two major problems with this compilation:

It sounds like it was mastered by an idiot.

The packaging is worse than those DVDs people try and sell in the pub.

The Rejects deserve better than this shoddy pish.

Sort it ahht or I'll set my dug onto ye.

The Dead Boys never really broke through into the public's consciousness, despite being one of the earlier punk bands. On 'YLS' though, they're focussed on their anger and buzzsaw guitars, Stiv Bators muttering and cursing between his hoarse vocals. The cover shot shows the band lurking like rats in an alley and their musical world is indeed that of a disease-infested underclass. Edgy and exciting almost throughout, they slip up occasionally: 'What Love Is,' for instance, doesn't have the intensity of most of the other songs. 'Sonic Reducer' sets the pace with an arresting intro, while 'Not Anymore' relies heavily on an impassioned delivery and the blam blam of 'Ain't Nothin' To Do' is punk at its best. The live 'Hey Little Girl' is another highlight. ... Read More:

114.Superstition by: Siouxsie & The Banshees

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Superstition
Apparently Siouxsie didn't like this album for years, dismissing it as too 'fussy' & sterile. Years later though she admitted the record has stood up pretty well. Personally I think it's one of her best & should really get more recognition. There are no bad songs on it (altho 'Drifter' is a bit dull for me). Gems on this record include 'Little Sister', 'Cry', 'Shadowtime' and 'Silly Thing'. Best of all though is the haunting, beautiful 'Ghost in You' - one of my favorite Banshees songs. I could almost say this is the Banshees at their most romantic without it detracting from their overall sound. Superb.

Lacking humour persistent in Peter Perrett's other work, this collection of out-takes shows the darker, more desperate side that the Only Ones rarely captured on their other releases. Want some proof? Just look at the titles: Flowers Die, My Rejection, Watch You Drown etc.

Counterfeit Woman (with the only guitar solo that ever mattered) and Hope Valley Blues match anything any rock/underground/indie band ever did.

Quite simply, one of the greatest works ever released and certainly better than any 'official' Only Ones work.

A compilation of some of the sharpest work - and also some of the most irritating - by Detroit's second noisiest, second most incendiary rocking teen combo. The MC5 were loud, sloppy, pretentious and full of half-baked revolutionary nonsense, but they could kick ass, as witnessed by the finest tracks on this album: the legendary uncensored version of "Kick Out the Jams", an extremely murky but fun version of "I Can Only Give You Everything" (Phil Coulter's finest hour), their late masterpiece "Over and Over", a sort of "Won't Get Fooled Again" without the druggy grandiosity. There's also some dull bar band rock which doesn't do them any favours (Wayne Kramer engagingly explains in the sleevenotes that they listened ... Read More:

117.Worlds Apart by: Subhumans
February 08, 1998
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Music : Worlds Apart
Weighing in at 40 or so minutes, this is by face value an everyday Subhumans release. Dick and the group have searing lyrics, pacey music and a heart of gold (although they wouldn't sell it for all the dollars in the world).

However, this album is a bit different from the usual Subhumans music - you can hear the words (ironically enough there is a song called "Can't hear the words").

The Subhumans are famous for riotious quick rants ("I don't wanna die" and "parasites" being classic examples off of earlier releases) but this album has more depth to it, similar to that of "Cradle to the Grave" and "29:29 Split Vision." The music is less angst-ridden agit-prop and has much more of a quasi-easy-listening (as far as punk goes) edge ... Read More:

I saw the Ramones live in 1978,in the UK,it was the most exciting rock concert I have ever been to.I was beginning to give up hope of ever finding an album that re-captured the excitement of that Ramones concert, until I bought this one.The Ramones - "Live January 7th 1978...."is the finest Ramones(or any other bands) live cd I have.It captures the true raw power and excitement of the Ramones at their very best and by far surpasses the much overdubbed "It's Alive"(which is still a great album). If you want to live the true Ramones live experience,BUY THIS NOW!You won't be disappointed(pity there isn't a DVD available of this performance?)

This was the second album from the re-activated Wire. "The First Letter" though very good, was tentative and slightly unsure of itself. No problem with "A Bell Is A Cup....". This is Wire at their best. Mixing a supreme pop sensibility with their angular, sharp arrangements. The guitars are all choppy and incisive, the drumming precise. Their use of electronics and synthetic sounds adds a soft, sumptuous sheen which contrasts nicely against the abrasive riffing guitars.

At the time this album and the others they did during this period were overshadowed by their 70's albums, "Pink Flag, "Chairs Missing" and "154". Those albums were important as they showed how a band could quickly develop from producing a punk classic to mixing psychedelia and more experimental ... Read More:
