The 1998 reissues of Suicide's first two eponymous albums were both wonderful, coming with great sleevenotes, bonus tracks & a second disc of rarities. 1977 was such a strong year for music- Marquee Moon, Low, Trans Europe Express, I Feel Love, The Idiot, Talking Heads debut etc- but this stands out even amid those classics.

The interview in the sleevenotes portrays the band's genus & origin, examples of that early music can be found on the bonus disc with the second album. Alan Vega (Vocals)and Martin Rev (Instruments) were the original duo later mimicked by Soft Cell, influenced by the approach jazz musicians like Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, John Coltrane & Thelonius Monk took (as well as The Stooges), they ended ... An utterly fantastic collection.

The Buzzcocks were masters of those three minute soap operas (on black vinyl)that we used to spend 99 pence a throw on back in the seventies.

They started as part of the punk movement, but went on to go beyond this, practically inventing the concept of power pop on their own with tight singles with great tunes and a good dose of camp.

Most of the Buzzcocks albums were bitty. This great collection represents them at their best. No filler guaranteed!

This is a great album. Not much more than 30 minutes in length it was The Jam's supposedly "punk" album - their response to the eponymous "The Clash" and "The Ramones". Granted it was played at breakneck speed, but that is as far as the punk thng really goes. Scratch under the surface and the 60s beat group, American r'n'b and motown influences are discernable. The Who, The Small Faces, The Spencer Davis Group are all in there.

Some of the lyrics are trite and "third form" English lesson-type, but you have to remember that Paul Weller was barely eighteen when this was released and seventeen when he wrote some of the songs. "In The City", even now, is spine-tingling stuff. That great three-pronged attack - Weller, Foxton, then finally Buckler ... Read More:

Or when The Jam took off and really started fulfilling the potential they had shown with a string of singles and intermittently on their previous albums In The City And This Is The Modern World. All Mod Cons see's Paul Weller embracing a more English stance to his song-writing , with undercurrents of 1960,s pop like The Kinks - so much so they even cover the Kinks song "David Watts". The albums title also alludes playfully to the bands prevalence in the Mod revival.
The songs on All Mod Cons are often about ordinary people , or places but viewed through Weller's coruscating filter . He scorns the 9-5 existence of "Mr Clean" ( "If I get the chance ill f**k up your life") while seemingly revelling in the indestructible qualities of "Billy Hunt" right down to it's terrace ... This album is as iconic as the band that recorded it. A true punk classic - it is music from the streets - music from the gutter -this is what real punk was, totally no frills music and image. No fancy production and wardrobe like other bands of the time, this group where real and the album reflects this. All the songs are blistering corkers, apart from 'i wanna be your boyfriend', which ive always thought was a bit soppy and poppy, but over the years it has grew on me and is to me an essential track on the album. Songs like 'i dont wanna walk around with you' and the way it fuses into the ending track 'today your love tomorrow the world' is pure class. 'Now i wanna sniff some glue', 'judy is a punk' and especially '53rd and 3rd' still send tingles down my spine. I'm in my 40's now, ... Read More:

Best tracks: "China Girl", "Nightclubbing", "Funtime", "Baby".

Iggy Pop's solo debut is a far cry from the raucous, thrilling rock of his music with The Stooges; here, Germanic cabaret and electronica are the key influences, and the result is a unique, exciting and powerful work; this was one of four albums David Bowie played a role in (the other three are his own Low and "Heroes" and Pop's Lust for Life) and they all contributed to marking 1977 as Bowie's most creatively fruitful year. Yet despite Bowie's unmistakable contributions, this is very much Pop's show, and his reinvention as jaded, mechanised, resigned onlooker is one of the 1970's greatest turns of character, very much Bowie-esque, in fact. Brian Eno famously commented that The Idiot was like "having your ... Read More:

I was reading a book by the jouranlist/broadcaster Paul Morley and he was speaking about the Strokes and how they have celverly created a new trend within the 'retro' field. Throughout the 90's we have seen bands take influence from styles and music of previous years, be it acid rock, garage, rock, 60's british invasion etc...

What the Strokes did which is very interesting is, to rather than directly associating themsleves directly to a band - (easiest example - oasis - beatles) they look like they harked back to some punk/rock band from the seventies - people think of the strokes and say "oh yes they are some retro punk, garage band - influenced by the seventies) - but when you actually look at it - they didnt actually look like any band from the seventies that much, neither did they make any direct link ... The first New York Dolls album is a fun collection of rock n' roll songs, but it really suffers from a lack of low end. The bass is almost inaudible even on my super bass heavy home stereo. That concern aside, what you're left with is an otherwise nicely produced record, with some well executed and fun ideas. The only real negative is the phase effect on the drums in "Vietnamese Baby".

Most of the songs on the record are based around that rhythm guitar style that Chuck Berry made famous, and that you'll hear on a lot of Status Quo records. Unfortunately, I'm not a fan of it. Nor am I a fan of the Rolling Stones, and there's a definite nod in that direction. You have to admire the Dolls' attitude though, and their ear for a good chorus. In fact, with it's very 50s rock n' roll base, you could look at it as a forerunner ... Read More:
