Siouxsie and the Banshees were always one of the most enigmatic bands to come out of the punk movement. They were about the last of the London bands to get a record deal, and they only really stayed with the punk theme for the first 2 albums.

This isn't quite the classic that 'Once Upon a Time' was, but it still has some great tracks on it. From the shoe-staring deliberate 'Melt' through the studio-perfect 'Cities in Dust' and on to the fantastic dance-beats of 'Kiss them for Me' this album shows a band evolving at a rate that few others could match.

There are a couple of down points though, like the over-orchestrated 'Dazzle' and a couple of other weak tracks, but overall a damn-good album.

The Stranglers were never easily categorised. Punk? New Wave? Goth? Christ knows, even 26 years after the latest track on this compo!

The best thing about this compo is that it didn't answer those questions on its' release in 1982 & doesn't know. The Stranglers weren't mavericks, they were just a flipping towering talent that never fitted neatly into anybody's pigeon-holes.

And after a quarter of a century, this is still the only compo you really want. Some of their Epic stuff was good(Skin Deep,European Female,Always The Sun), but it doesn't match the energy, verve or flair of every track on this little lot.

It does concentrate on the singles, apart from Walk On By, initially an album freebie, La ... Read More:

First note: if you're very picky about vocals you might not like Tom Verlaine's voice. He sounds like a yodeller who's been punched in the throat. I actually think it has character, but a lot of my friends detest Television because of how the vocalist sings. If you like weird vocalists, though, you might like him.

But where Television really come to the front is their guitar work. Make no mistake, these aren't Eric Clapton-type guitarists. Although they have the big solos they're not blues based: using more jazzy scales (which is very odd for a band considered at the forefront of punk), Television craft 8 unique, very powerful songs that redefine how the guitar can be used. When I first bought this album I just found it very pleasurable to ... Read More:

54.Spunk by: Sex Pistols
February 26, 2008
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Music : Spunk
If you're after THE album to own as a Classic either of The Pistol's themselves, or Punk music as an era in our rock history, then look no further than this.
Down here in what many would regard as 'sleepy old Dorset,' we were as on the ball in 1977 as the rest of the UK with this album. Word went around about the bootleg record stall at Wimborne Market having copies of 'Spunk,' so nipping out from work 5 minutes early one lunch hour on market day to get one was the order of the day.
The sleeve notes in the booklet with this 'official' CD release say it was going for a fiver, but the stall-holder at the market sold his for a tenner, and with the buzz going around about it, it was the 'must-have' LP of the day and if he'd asked fifteen you'd have paid it. ... Read More:

First of all: how amazing are these Rhino reissues of the Ramones' albums? I mean this one has more bonus tracks than original album tracks! Fantastic value, as the Ramones' albums on their own were very short. These reissues use the original album covers, come in slipcases, and the booklets all contain lots of contemporary pictures of the band, and excellent new sleevenotes (by different people for each album), and also print the lyrics! They're the best!

The bonus tracks on this album are a (complete, I assume) Ramones live performance at the ROXY from December 1976, with songs from the (fantastic) first album as well as from the second album itself. Joey introduces most songs with such comments as "This is for all you salsa fans" (Havana Affair) or, to ... Read More:

If you want a starting point as to what Siouxie and the Banshees were about, start here.
This a live collection of songs from the first 4 albums, plus the single Dear Prudence and it is stunning, starting with Israel, it just gets better, ending with huge scarey Voodoo Dolly.
Amazing sound, great performance, Robert Smith( The Cure) 'filling in' for the recently departed but brillant guitarist John Mc Geoch ( albums he played on - Kaleidoscope, and Juju), a band on form and enjoying themselves.
get the DVD, as its great to watch.
One of the best live albums ever, in my opinion.
Enjoy

A must have. Hell had already performed versions of some of the key tracks - including Love Comes in Spurts and Blank Generation - during his spells with Television and the Heartbreakers. But the versions on this legendary album finally allowed the songs to stand out as some of the great recordings of the punk period. Hell's lyrics - among the sharpest of the era - find their ideal foil with Ivan Julian and Robert Quine's uncanny guitar interplay. While Hell's wordplay and decent bass playing fitted made him an ideal frontman, Quine is in many ways the star of the show. His remarkable solos heralded the arrival of a major talent, whose work - despite spells with Lou Reed, Lloyd Cole and Matthew Sweet - never really got the recognition that one of the all time great guitarists ... When it comes to punk albums there's none better, when it comes to daft punk albums then the Damned's Machine Gun Etiquette is special. I now own this album on vinyl, cassette, CD and 25th Anniversary CD, I can't get enough of it. From Love Song launching the album through to Plan 9, Channel 7 and ending with Smash It Up parts 1 and 2 every track is a real classic. I recently saw the Damned live at the Nottm Rock City (my favourite venue) and they played just about every track from Machine Gun Etiquette which highlighted the importance of this album to the band. Once you have heard this you will be hooked, go on buy it and be happy forever.

This album for me marks a vast improvement on the previous one, "Feline". Whether this was due to Laurie Latham's production (the opening to the track "Laughing" is so reminiscent of his work for Paul Young) is a moot point: sometimes the brass and backing vocals work, sometimes they don't. What there is on this album for sure, however, is plenty of echo and depth, and plenty of polish too. (Compare the extra tracks at the end of this CD produced solely by the Stranglers.)

Of the original eleven tracks, I can take or leave the ironical "Let Me Down Easy" (all that's missing is the orchestra); the 50s rocker "Uptown"; the 60s rocker "Punch & Judy"; "Souls" (nothing special); and the quirky "Mad Hatter".

But I have plenty of good time for the remaining ... Read More:
