When Hip-O Select announced the latest installment of its Lost & Found series, Diana Ross And The Supremes Let the Music Play, the play list seemed to be top heavy with alternative vocals and mixes. However, deeper digging into this release reveals some extraordinary gems. Connoisseurs of the legendary harmonies of Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson and Diana Ross will find a treasure trove here.
Unearthed from the legendary Motown vaults is (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction from the sessions intended for the Supremes A Go-Go lp. Diana bites into the Rolling Stones classic with gusto, no doubt taking some satisfaction from the fact that the Supremes knocked the Stones out of the number one spot not once, but twice in their heyday! This another great album from Miss.Labelle, and if you haven't heard much from this great singer this is a great first album to listen to, with all of her biggest hits, "Lady Marmalade", "If You Asked Me To", "On My Own" and some great ballads "Let Me Be Your Lady", and some funky eighties songs, "New Attitude" and "Yo Mister". Lots of fun and emotional songs all in one CD, buy this and you will learn what music is really about!
From Katy Beard a fan forever

I am listening to this CD as I write this & I promise you it is absolute 100% quality, all the way through. These early recordings are an absolute treat. Stevie Wonder is not & never has been one of my very favourite artists but despite that,I still enjoy his music & I could not recommend this album more highly - the genius of the man is evident on this set of recordings. Wonderful in every way & a steal at the price - quality like this should surely cost more ? Go mad & treat yourself !

Much has been written about the original release and I share the view that it truly is one of the great albums; transcending both time and genre.
What the reviews here fail to mention are the treasures to be found within the live recording from The Kennedy Center. Close listening to this concert reveals moments of utter beauty. The slowed moments referred to by other reviewers enhance the depth of feeling and this can be felt too in the reactions of the audience who respond rapturously to Gaye's heartfelt improvisations, backed perfectly by some wonderful playing by the supporting musicians. The recording may indeed lack the polish of the studio release but its extremes of intensity and subtlety in performance showcase a true genius at the ... 105.Who is Jill Scott? by: Jill Scott

Music : Who is Jill Scott?
Jill's first album and it came as a breath of fresh air. Not only has Jill Scott one of the most soulful voices i've heard in years but she has integrity and spirit. Her studio work is excellent and Jill Scott live is magical and well worth a try if you like this. There are so many stand out tracks on this CD it is hard to pick out one for special mention. All I can say is buy this album and enjoy the poetry of her lyrics and feel the soul in her vocals. Amazing artist!

After the runaway success of Volume 1, which made No 2 on the album chart, this Volume 2 followed less than a year later.

Volume 2 did not sell as well, but still made No 8. In spite of the growing popularity of Motown in Britain, and more airplay due to Radio 1 pumping out of millions of transistor radios, this one contained less British hits than Volume 1. I think that is because they songs were chosen from a shorter period than the first one.

My favorite here is Diana Ross & The Supremes 'Reflections', a fine tamborine driven masterpiece. Simple on one level, but there is a lot going on in there. The writers and producers at Motown knew how to get the best out of their artists.

The British gave white Canadian ... Read More:

I'm not really sure how to grade this album.

I like Sam Cooke's music, but I'm not THAT big a fan, so for me this is really more of a four-star album. But as far as Sam Cooke-collections go, it is superb, spanning all his best and best-known "secular" songs (the gospel material isn't here). And considering that this is some of the best, most influential soul music ever recorded, I suppose "Greatest Hits" deserves a five star rating (although these studio recordings don't have the nerve of the live renditions on Cooke's magnificent "Live At The Harlem Square Club" album).

As I said, everything the casual fan needs is here. Soft, tender ballads...almost too sweet at times, but Cooke was a black man trying to make it in a world dominated by often ... Read More:

Motown writer and producer Deke Richards who played a major role in the Supremes "Love Child" single and album was as he put it, "given the keys to the Rolls Royce of Motown." Along with Hal Davis and Berry Gordy, they masterminded Diana Ross' second solo album originally released in 1970, and only now available in North America in an expanded compact disc format. Worth the wait? You bet!
In the liner notes, Richards recalled Gordy wanting "something different out on Diana yesterday" and although "Everything Is Everything" is somewhat heavy with cover tunes, Ross finds nooks and crannies in familiar songs to weave her magic.
Diana Ross was in her vocal prime at the time of this recording and standout tracks include the Anna Gaye and Marvin Gaye composition ... Read More:

Marvin's spoken intro to the title track sums up the purpose of this set. Made to fund his divorce from Anna Gordy, Gaye had originally planned a quickly recorded album, low on quality, to spite his one time muse, since the judge had written the order into the divorce settlement. The original critical response to "Here My Dear" seemed to reinforce that view, as Gaye's popularity waned spectacularly in the late 70's. Indeed, it had been an incredible fall from the heights of the "What's Going On" era.

Marvin Gaye's problems with his public persona have been well documented by David Ritz, his friend and biographer. It was Ritz who identified the 2 sides of Marvins' personality and it was Ritz who persuaded him to return to performing in 1982. In doing so, he revitalized ... Read More:
