EWF laid out an abundance of great classic albums during the 70s, 80s and even into the 90s but this one here's my favourite of them all. It's probably because it's the first EWF album I ever bought. I remember seeing all the happy people on "Soul Train" dancing to "In The Stone" back in the day and falling immediately in love with their sound. I got the record shortly after and have been an EWF fan ever since. 1979 was a really good year for music.

As I suppose most folk know already, back then, EWF were the quintessential band, complete with vocalists, rhythm section and horns. I just adore the sound of Maurice White's voice. Philip Bailey's I can take or leave but I do admit the two voices complement each other incredibly well. ... Read More:

You can listen to this album anywhere you like. In the car, at home with a loved one, over dinner with friends or in a cafe/restaurant and the feeling is always the same. Washed over with good feelings and ambience second to none. The songs never date and you find yourself either singing along to them or tapping the wheel or nodding your head. You even think, "Didn't know he recorded this one!!" during one or two of them.
A great album featuring an underestimated and under exposed artiste.

Barry White’s brand of sensual orchestral seventies soul is sorely missed. We can do with a bit of old-fashioned sensuality on radio these days. This love song collection includes all his work (Did he do anything but love songs?) His greatest hits from that melody-friendly decade are all here: Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love, I’m Gonna Love You Just A Little Bit More and the sublime You’re The First, The Last, My Everything. I always liked his understated version of Just The Way You Are much more than Billy Joel’s overwrought emoting on the original, and Never Never Gonna Give You Up is still as delicious now as it was back then. There’s not a bad track on Love Songs and many classics, like It May Be Winter Outside (But ... Read More:

This was Aretha's fourth album for Atlantic and was top five in both UK and US, despite a playing time of under half-an-hour. When the grooves are as funky as these, who cares? Two great tracks had already been hit singles when the album came out - Think, which had been recorded on 15 April 1968, the day Martin Luther King was assassinated; and her fantastic re-interpretation of Burt Bacharach's I Say A Little Prayer, which she and the Sweet Inspirations had apparently worked up while on tour, just for fun. In America I Say A Little Prayer was buried as a flipside before discerning deejays turned it over, but it had been the bona-fide A-side the month before in the UK where it reached number 4.
Her revival of Don Covay's See Saw was the first single ... Read More:

I was first intoduced to Louis Jordan by the excellent musical Five Guys Named Moe and have been a huge fan ever since. He is the godfather of R&B, artists such as Clanrence Gate Mouth Brown and B.B King have made tribute albums, while Little Richard and Chuck Berry name him as a major influence. You have probably heard his songs in tv ads (Knock Me A Kiss and Beans and Cornbread spring to mind) and Elwood Blues plays "Saturday Night Fishfry" in Blues Brothers and names him as an impoart influence in Blues Brothers 2000 (what more recomendation do you need)There are a lot of good albums of his out there, but this clearly the biggest and a pleasure it is to. There are many tracks I had never heard before, but it is missing "Hurry Home" a track that seemed almost ... Read More:

Timed to be released to shamelessly exploit the Valentine's Day market, nevertheless, this album is a great introduction to one of the very finest soul singers ever.

Timeless classics such as 'Tired of Being Alone' and 'Take Me to the River' sit alongside Al's own cover versions of 'Light My Fire' and 'How can You Mend a Broken Heart' to show what a great singer he was / is. Buy it, if only to find out that there's more to Al Green than guest appearances in Ally McBeal.

Okay, I have always been a huge fan of smooth soul and R&B, and Roberta Flack has always been the perfect mix of those two genres. I usually like my soul music with a little oomph, but damn, I melt each and every single time I listen to Roberta's music. Not since Dionne Warwick has there been a singer who sang her songs so effortlessly. This is a rather short compilation, but it's her first, and still the best if you ask me. All of her greatest hits are here. From the stunning, and hopelessly romantic "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", to her legendary collaboration with Mr. H on "Where Is the Love". But these are far from being the only highlights on this album. Her reading of The Shirelle's "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" is fantastic, and "Feel Like Makin' ... Read More:
