This is the sixth in the series of special Christmas albums dedicated to raising money for the Special Olympics, but this one is very different from previous albums that generally featured pop and rock music. This album, as its title suggests, features acoustic country and bluegrass music. As far as I know, all the recordings are new although some of the artists have recorded their chosen songs previously. My first thought when I heard Amy Grant was releasing a best of Christmas CD was "Why?" But I quickly thought about the artists who release best of's after three regular releases. And Amy's oldest Christmas release was in 1983, so my question became "Why not?" And, suddenly, I found myself first in line to buy it the day it came out. Now keep in mind that I love Amy's first two Christmas releases and enjoy the third. There was no way I was seriously going to miss this. The CD is made up of 18 tracks, four of which are new. The disc opens with "Jingle Bells." Now this isn't your normal version but the version made famous by Barbra Streisand on her first Christmas album 40 years ago. People seem to fall into either ... Some of the best concerts I've ever been to were the Albion Band Christmas shows in the 1980s, with Kathy LeSurf, Phil Beer, Doug Morter and Ashley. They had it all - Mummers' play, "Old Sam" recitation, jokes, dancing and great songs. This CD is a reflection of the band's current Christmas show and it's just not in the same league. Too much Christianity to start with (and I know that sounds daft at Christmas, but it just isn't as much fun). Ashley, you need to go back to the live and lively shows you did in the eighties, record one of them live and stick it out on CD for next Christmas.

Another good one from Barry, opening with a peaceful version of Winter Wonderland, then launching into a Broadway version of Happy Holiday/Winter Wonderland. Frequently played throughout the Holiday Season at my house, the two Christmas cd offer is a bargain. But why oh why did he chose that awful photo for the cover!

.............A copy of this great cd, i dare you to buy it and only get it out at christmas! It can be enjoyed the whole year round i mean i was listing to in greece in June! A absolute must have in your collection, next to the writings on the wall and survivor of course! 10/10 Good on you girls, you're at your best on this album.....Beyonce, Michelle and Kelly you rock! The Roches are one of the best vocal acts in the world, and here they take a bunch of hoary old carols and hymns, mix them with a couple of original compositions, and produce the perfect Christmas album. For Unto Us A Child Is Born is a stunning arrangement, the three voices spiralling off in totally different directions but somehow remaining tied to the central theme and each other. Frosty The Snowman is hilarious - the girls affecting exaggerated New Yoik accents and arguing with a bunch of kids along the way. A few of the songs are done straight, and that leavens the mixture beautifully, giving you a chance to get ready for the next surprise. Play this in your house at Yuletide - a wonderful Christmas atmosphere is guaranteed.
