After "Whipped Cream & Other Delights" the "Christmas Album" is actually one of the better albums put out by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. One of the most successful instrumental performers in music history, Albert shared arrangement duties on this 1968 album with Shorty Rogers, the "cool jazz" trumpeter, with Albert setting up the brass and Rogers the strings. The result is ten tracks of mostly familiar Christmas songs done in the Tijuana Brass' Ameriachi style works for the most part. "My Favorite Things" and "Sleigh Ride" have their problems, but most of these songs work, especially if you are partial to the Tijuana Brass sound. This is a beautiful, evocative Christmas album, from the nostalgic cover photos to the last note on the CD. I'm a big fan of Rufus and Martha, but Kate and Anna make a great contribution to this too. It is perhaps a little too eclectic, stylistically, hence the loss of one star, but stick it on on the first of December and Christmas is here. Personal favourites are Port Starboard Sox, Rebel Jesus, the beautiful Counting Stars (a Tom Waits-style spoken account of a loser who never makes it home for Christmas - absolutely heartbreaking) and especially Rufus' Spotlight On Christmas - one of his finest songs, and a great vocal performance.

Even the picture on the cover is designed to mislead people, the whole album has not got a lot to do with Phil Spector. If you really want this cd, HMV sell it for £2.99

This is a delight from start to finish. Wonderful versatility, stunning voices and a real warmth in the performance. If you want a very talented choir at its best you can do no better than this. My Christmas has come early this year as I can't stop playing Hark! If you are looking for a truly wonderful Christmas album look no further you will not be disappointed.

Nothing gets me in a Christmas mood quite like one of those old crooners. And my favourite is Dean Martin. I have a lot of these songs on old casettes and compilations, but I thought I'd get this one as it had all Dean Martin Christmas songs. It does however lose one star. My favourite song, Baby, it's cold outside, has been marred by removing the original female vocal and having some terrible american contemporary woman called Martina McBride sing over it. I find it extremly distasteful when living 'artists' sing duets with legends who are dead, and can't get a word in wether or not they aprove of such a venture. Should be offered at amazon with a warning saying: Caution! Christmas spirit marred by contemporary 'country superstar'! ... Read More:
