Alfie has been incredibly brave as an Englsh singer in producing this CD compiled with neapolitan songs. The usual realm of Italian tenors but Alfie sings amazingly on the album bringing his own youthful style to the songs. The song I know as 'la veste bianca' is a rare delight as well as many of the others on this album. I love the whole CD and think he is the greatest.

I only really came to appreciate Sibelius in the last couple of years, travelling through time from Beethoven, Schumann, and Brahms; I'm glad to have taken the trouble. Although I find something a little sterile about some aspects of the performances of some parts of this bargain box, I guess that Sir Colin Davis is allowed to relax a little on this umpteenth traversal of Sibelius's orchestral music. The RCA sound quality is just fine and I agree with the other reviewers that this set would make a great choice for Sibelius beginners; it certainly proved to be so for me!

in hopes of roping in us 'dumb American consumers' with the 'hot chicks' CD cover. The music is excellent and the front (UK) cover magical. And, until they stop putting "EXPLICIT LYRICS!" warnings in as part of a cd's cover art, instead of removable stickers, (or better yet, none at all) I will buy my CDs from Amazon.UK. the prices usually are about the same, and it can take only THREE DAYS from when I put an the order, to when it arrives (I live in Seattle. Ironic-this is where Amazon started) Oh, and then on every back cover and some label art contain an idiotic FBI warning. I was very disappointed to find that Virgin/Veritas have not included the very full and interesting 68 page booklet, containing the libretto, essays and notes, which came with the original EMI publication.

This album is a compilation of two recordings made in 1971 and 1978, by two of the greatest classical guitarists ever to have lived, and certainly the two greatest living today. These masters have almost never collaborated, and so these recordings are particularly valuable. The repertoire here is a beautifully chosen and varied one. It includes pieces that will be familiar to all classical guitar enthusiasts, with compositions by Carulli, Albeniz and Granados. Giuliani's "Variazioni Concertanti" is particularly wonderful, and illustrates writing for the guitar at its peak. This is one piece of music is revolutionary. Instead of harmony or "tune" as it's content it uses rhythm. Primeval and dark it shows the picture of the tradition rite of spring Stravinsky was trying to show. This is ballet at it's best and at it's most raw. I cannot recommend this music enough. This forms a sort of bridge between the romantic era and the modern movement. Mix this music with works such as Picasso or even impressionists as Renoir washed down with buckets of absinthe and you will see what a revolution in sound and vision (plus resolve!) was going on. I have owned this recording since it first came out and I wore out two LP's. I am not Karajan's greatest fan but here he is in the repertoire he does best and he has three soloists who all thoroughly deserve the epithet "great". The tempi are spot on. The playing of Oistrakh and Rostropovich in the slow movement still takes my breath away. Throughout the three soloists empathise and play together perfectly and in the final movement with real playfulness. I have never tired of this recording in the near 40 years I have owned it. The CD coupling with the Brahms is a sensible one and it is well played. Oistrakh remains my favourite violinist not just for his richness of tone but for his breadth of repertoire.
