I captured this on video some twenty years ago, but, unfortunately, missed recording the first five minutes. Never mind, it has been a perennial Christmas favourite. Despite the passage of years, it still comes out each December. In fact, if it were not for this film I would probably not have retained my video player! A month ago, I left my previous job and was rewarded with a multi region DVD recorder/player. I immediately sent off for the DVD via Amazon. I can now see the whole film!! The film is a marvellous evocation of a by-gone era, but one we would all like to still experience. A little jewel of a film! This movie was released with not much fanfare in 1983, but has developed a loyal following in the U.S. due to it's repeated airing on cable television. Such is it's cult following, that American cable network TBS regularly hosts a "Christmas Story Marathon" during which the film is shown for 24 hours straight, from Christmas Eve to Christmas Day! I moved to Ireland from America 6 years ago, and have searched in vain for this film to appear on the Christmas schedule of RTE, BBC, Sky or any of the other 500 channels on my system. Since the last Goon has passed away, I have been playing a couple of my favourite cds. And Lo! this is one of them.It has 4 classic shows and includes previously unreleased material. I will pick on three highlights; "I'm walking backwards for christmas" the first time Spike unleashed this comic song to the unsuspecting public. Enter Bluebottle through the pipe. A master of a thousand voices was Peter Sellers. The third one was the John Snagge meeting Eccles, applying for the announcers job. Snagge could not beleive Eccles "was at Cambridge". The Grinch feels like a movie made for two reasons: to cash in on Christmas. And to cash in on Dr Seuss. The movie lacks charm. Nothing really works within it. Carrey's performance is tolerable, but I think Seuss would be mortified at how they've portrayed his character. The Whos of Whoville are some of the creepiest make-up jobs I've ever seen. Although I'm not surprised they made it screen looking this eerie, since Ron Howard is the director, and I've yet to be impressed by anything he's put on screen. The one saving grace of this film is some really nice portrayals of Christmas-y landscapes. They do a great job of evoking that warmth and wonder of Christmas season.
