Having taken over the mantle of composing the James Bond movie soundtracks for the 90s (and very good they are too), David Arnold revisits Bond theme songs in this project, working with a wide range of artists to produce a set of really interesting covers. And the whole CD is worth buying just for the astounding first track - David McAlmont is Miss Shirley Bassey as his falsetto vamps up 'Diamonds are Forever' in homage to the queen of Bond theme songs and gay icon. After that you feel rather let down by Aimee Mann's understated 'Nobody does it better' - although listened to separately, this track will grow on you. Chrissie Hynde rocks out in 'Live and let die', and the Propellerheads do their drum'n'bass thing brilliantly with 'On her Majesty's ... Read More:

This MATILDE DI SHABRAN (Pesaro 1996) being my 38th Rossini opera on disc (only RICCIARDO & ZORAIDE is missing!), I can't recommend it highly enough, not least to rare opera hunters. Hearing the set over and over again for more than a week now, I purchased it primarily for Massis, whose unforgettable Countess Adele I saw three times in Glyndebourne's LE COMTE ORY 10 years ago and still enjoy endlessly on DVD. She and Florez (my first disc of either artist) nail their fiendish notes disarmingly, as if they're doing nothing less than breathing like the rest of mankind, though many times you'd wonder if they breathe at all! The supporting (obscure but generally secure) cast - together with a superb chorus and orchestra - complement the well-matched athletic ... Read More:

This "Sleeping Beauty" is beautiful. The costumes are lavish and beautiful and the sets wistful, romantic, and straight out of a fairy tale.

The dancing, all around, is amazing, and Alina Cojocaru is wonderful as Aurora. Her light gracefulness really shines during Aurora's dances in the ballet. She makes a youthful, sweet, smiling, tender princess - i.e. a princess on the inside as well as on the outside. Even on the hard moments like the Rose Adagio, Alina's Aurora remains with us - gentle, warm, and accessible.

During the notorious Rose Adagio, she makes her balances perfectly. I have seen other ballerinas perform them, some of them scarcely pausing between taking their different suitors' hands, or else unsteady during those horrible, ... Read More:

Another of my favourite CDs! Oxford Camerata thoroughly do justice to Tallis's works with their harmonious blend of voices and expressive interpretation. The accompanying booklet also gives the texts and translations for the pieces, which will please many listeners. This is a bargain of a CD and a "must" for anyone interested in early music.

Julian Bream is a hugely under-rated artist and deserves more recognition than J.Williams in my opinion. I listened to Williams playing the same piece with Barenboim, but was unimpressed by his mechanical precision ( often mistaken by listeners and critics alike for his artistic strength ) and lack of emotion and tonal delicacy. He can not match the subtlety and richness of tones Bream produce and the soulful singing quality of melodie line. This recording of Aranjuez Concerto is a good proof. J.E.Gardiner provise brilliant and deeply-felt support with the orhcestra.

Dancers fabulous as usual, but unfortunately the original full length ballet has been severely cut, (to 78 minutes, for goodness sake) missing out a great many of the set pieces and therefore not showing to its best advantage. The missing scenes are wonderful to watch. I did have the full version originally and wish I could obtain it again.

Karajan recorded the four Brahms symphonies three times for DG and for me the earliest (1963 or thereabouts) is the best by a fair margin, and although not perfect, the sound quality is better - more natural and open. There's more life, spontanaity and drama in the 60s cycle, which by comparison his later efforts sound somewhat mannered. Like much of Karajan's output, his earlier years with the BPO give better performances. Later repeats (say 1970 onwards) are generally marred by a BPO which had been over-refined by Karajan's influence in the way it sounded - plush and too 'well-rounded' - a good anology would be a typical German big car; smooth and comfortable but ultimately bland and boring. The approach might suit Richard Strauss but not Brahms or Beethoven. Also, ... Read More:

This is a remarkable piece of music by any measure and should be in everyone's classical collection even if you are not normally a fan of vocal or religious music. You'll see many people lavish superlatives on this piece of music - and with absolute justification. In my view no superlative would be over-the-top.

For my part, I could say that it is sublime, superb, even peerless. But actually, I think it is other-worldly. It is quite simply staggering, for several reasons...
1) The ambition of Spem in alium is audacious. Composed circa 1570, written for 40 voices arranged in 8 independent choirs of 5 voices, each voice having a separate part, but all adhering to an overarching sense of cohesion. It is amazingly complex, mesmerisingly beautiful and, unsurprisingly, ... Read More:

It has become `de rigueur' for choral works to be performed in their original languages: For example, where once Brahms' German Requiem or Haydn's Creation were regularly sung in English- often by large northern choirs - nowadays it seems that no-one dares to sing them in anything other than German.

The fact is that, in the case of The Creation, the English version has as much validity as the German, and it would appear that Haydn had both languages in mind when setting his text: all the more reason to have a recording in English.

Similarly, where once works such as Bach's B Minor Mass would have been given by huge choirs, modern `historically informed' practise tends towards paring down the forces, even to the extreme of having a single singer for each vocal line. ... Read More:
