This Naxos double CD is effectively a reworking of the original single CD release `The Best of Debussy', expanded to include more of the composer's music then attractively packaged with new artwork and a card slip-case cover showing an amusing caricature of the composer. As with any `Best Of' compilation much of the composer's work will inevitably be omitted - Debussy incidentally wrote around 227 works so the 23 pieces on these CDs represent only a small proportion of his lifetime works. There are however over 2 and a half hours of music here to be enjoyed and it's a good cross-section of Debussy's music. If you find this on Youtube and listen to im Abendrot, she seems to sing for just about a whole minute from about 2:20 to 3:20, without any significant chance to breathe. No strain, just a great sound that keeps on coming. I could listen to this record every day.

I have given some time to this box set and found the orchestral playing to be foursquare and the conducting not particularly inspired. How on earth anyone can pretend to compare these to Rattle's wonderful (more expensive) VPO set is beyond me. The sound is pretty good in Liverpool and Manchester studios/concert halls. Like Mackerras' Haydn on Telarc, this does nothing to me, despite its popularity. His Mozart symphonies on Telarc, and Handel etc are wonderful, but this Beethoven is dull and obvious, to my ears. Sorry. Kozena has an amazing voice with great depth and understanding. All the songs/arias on this recital CD are sung with passion and emotion. Kozena wipes the floor with other so called "classical/opera" singers whom get great publicity but vocally they are not up to scratch (eg the likes of Katherine Jenkins).

This is a good collection of music by Johann Sebastian Bach. Half of the album consists of his cello suites, being transcribed by Segovia for guitarist John Williams (not to be confused with John Williams the American composer of film music), and the remainder is an assortment of transcriptions, again by Segovia, from other instruments including the violin partitas (spelt incorrectly as `paritia' on the track list) and lute suites. All the works are lively and happy pieces - the terms such as allemande, courante, sarabande, minuetto, gigue, bouree, gavotte and chaconne have Italian and French origins and are used to describe the rhythm of dance orientated music themes. In many ways, this was Sutherland's return to form, for the much criticised mooning is largely absent. The voice is firm, rich, and she's fully in control of it. And for me that's the first problem: There's just no getting away from the fact that here is a very mature, matronly heroine, who sounds in the pink of health. Violetta is supposed to be young and desperately ill... Some singers allow little vocal frailties into their singing to bring the character alive (Cotrubas, Gheorghiu, Callas). Sutherland never does, and her attempts at being expressive strike me as...manufactured. She sounds like a not-so-young diva enjoying a big sing. But in a role she's grown out of. This (along with the other CDs which form Lewis's complete Beethoven cycle) is the set I would recommend as the best single recording to have if you want just one recording of all these works, and as a recording that everyone ought to want to have in addition to any others. Other performances are wilder, faster, and louder - or generally more extreme - but if you really want to understand the works, these are quite wonderful. You won't really get the point if you're only awake to speed and dynamics, but if you're prepared to listen to these performances seriously you'll find out more about what's going in Beethoven than from any other performances I know. What you have here are deep sensitivity and a great command of piano tone in the service of an outstanding intellect. ... Read More:

Using the world `Ultimate' for the title of a single CD of 1 hour and 15 minutes for this most famous of British composers is a rather bold claim. This release (from 1997) is by no means the `Ultimate' (how could it when it contains such a small fraction of Elgar's output?) and it's definitely not the best value when rated alongside others of its type, for there are plenty of good Elgar collections available, consisting of anything between 5 disc sets up to 30 disc boxes representing a large chunk of the composers works. The collection is saved from anonymity perhaps by its consistency, for most of the performances are by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Sir Andrew Davis, making a good quality and nicely uniform presentation of the ... Benchmark recording of both the anthems and the Ode which is a delicious treat. Even though the Hyperion cd of the Ode is good this is far better. You need no other version of these works. This is it.

Every so often a CD comes along where just one track takes your breath away, and no matter what the disc cost it immediately becomes priceless in your collection. Here the track in question is 21), an arrangement by VW for voice, violin and piano of the folksong "How cold the wind doth blow", also known as "The Unquiet Ghost". I'd never heard this arrangment by VW before (he arranged it a number of times), and was literally blown away. The singing, by the wonderful Robert Tear, and the equally wonderful accompaniment from Hugh Bean and Philip Ledger (the former made the best recording EVER of The Lark Ascending, with Boult, by the way), allied to the timeless melody and tragic words, will break your heart.
