The Naxos historical label includes all four Rachmaninov piano concertos, numbers 1 and 4 on this CD and concertos 2 and 3 available on a separate release.

Played by Rachmnainov himself, there is immense historical significance with these recordings, which were originally made by the (quirkily named) company formerly known as the `Victor Talking Machine Company' in 1929, 1939 and 1940.

The sound is obviously not comparable with that produced by today's recording techniques - the quieter moments at times displaying something akin to the sound of an old mono 78 record being played with a worn out needle, but it's the performances themselves which are of interest, and whether or not they are played faithfully to ... This deeply moving account of the work can well match the acclaimed RCA recording by Tashi Quartet. Main difference is that Shaham's ensemble allows more freedom of expression for individual instrument and every movement is much slower than Tashi ( DG Timing 3'01 / 5'31 / 8'51 / 1'43 / 10'00 / 5'38 / 8'18 / 9'17 ).

Another advantage of this recording is the very realistic sound quality of each instrument. I'm particularly pleased with the piano part which has amazing presence throughout the music, providing rich, almost orchestra-like sonority, well balanced with other three instruments (not restrained as mere background support like in so many other recordings).

Shaham's rendition of the last movement is one of the most moving ... Read More:

The first thing to say is that whatever you think of these performances, be careful what you pay for a disc amounting to only 41 minutes of music. I find one of the works much more successful than the other, and I actually suspect that the composer may have as much to do with that as do the performers. The Magnificat (here in its more familiar D major version) simply does not strike me as being equal in inspiration to the best of the cantatas, such as no 51, and to whatever extent this may be a valid view the recording (certainly) and the performance (possibly) conspire to reinforce it.

You may experience a slight problem in setting the best volume-level for the Magnificat. The setting that suits the arias best may make the opening chorus uncomfortably ... Read More:

Three of Vivaldi's most beautiful works are brought together on this CD. The bookends, the Gloria and the Magnificat, are well known but the real gem is the middle work, Dixit Dominus for two choirs. The Dixit Dominus draws themes and rythms that are reminiscent of other of Vivaldi's work and fans of the Vivaldi album featuring Cecilia Bartoli and Il Giardino Armonico will appreciate the vocal dexterity required by both of the female soloists. There is a wonderful weaving of the music within and between the two choirs. A quite stunning violin obligato accompanies one of the soloist's tracks.

Unfortunately, this treasure is destined to remain buried owing to the appalling cataloguing by Amazon. It is RV 594 and not RV 564 as shown and the sample track that ... Read More:

This is a two-CD collection of some of the finest orchestral moments in Wagner's operatic repertoire. It is in many respects the perfect introduction to the power of his music.

The first CD focuses on "music of power, conflict and death" (as the blurb states), whilst the second concentrates on "music of love, ecstasy and redemption". We can all take this with a pinch of salt, of course, but that is not to deny the power of the music.

The extracts are from the Deutsche Grammophon and Decca catalogues, featuring top orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic and the Philharmonia, conducted by the likes of Karajan, Bohm and Sinopoli.

It's not a perfect collection. For example, many of the tracks are extracts from ... Read More:

I recently purchased this box set, knowing that Karajan is one of the all time greats. The performance its self is very good, however on my high quality audio equipment I was diappointed by the sound quality of the recording. There is a constant noise of static in the background of every single recording... it is very off putting during the quiet sequences eg. opening of the 9th. I do not know what to do now, should I put up with it or seek another recording? Disappointed.

This is a superb recording, particularly the Tchaikovsky. Like a lot of people, one of my first experiences of classical music was the Piano concerto No 1 by Tchaikovsky. As a teenager I loved it, but after repeated listening, and exposure to the concertos of Beethoven et al, I completely lost interest. I had thought, obviously wrongly, that I had outgrown it. Listening to Argerich's electrifying performance has rekindled the flame. Like all great artists, she imposes her own personality on the music. A lot of music lovers look down on this work, but listen to this rendition and you will see it completely differently. The Rachmaninoff is equally spellbinding, altogether a fabulous disc.

I don't think anyone could argue with Vladimir Ashkenazy's ability to perform Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev or Scriabin with great eloquence and passion. He seems so at home in that repertoire.
However, when placed in the entirely more intimate environment of Chopin he really doesn't seem to know what to do. His waltzes are bland and sound just like encore pieces with little or no real expression, his mazurkas are just too dull.
In Ashkenazy's hands the etudes do sound wonderful, however, and I like his recordings of the polonaises also, and the scherzi and ballades.
This recording of the nocturnes falls somewhere in the middle. However, the Nocturnes really are one of the cornerstones of piano music and there are many much better recordings to be had, in my opinion.
Ashkenazy is ... Read More:

This disc can be recommended enthusiastically to all admirers of Britten's work and also to newcomers. His genius and originality often show up most clearly when he writes for small forces. There are 33 items in total here, twelve in the Ceremony of Carols itself and twelve more songs in the collection entitled 'Friday afternoons' because that was when they were first rehearsed by his brother's pupils. Three others form a single group of settings of the highly individual and atmospheric Walter de la Mare, and the remaining six are isolated compositions from various stages of Britten's life, the Shakespeare number being accurately 'Fancie' and not 'Francie'. The Ceremony itself is set for trebles with a virtuosic harp accompaniment despatched with enormous panache by Skaila Kanga. The other items are occasionally ... Read More:

I once sang in a choir and had the pleaure of performing these glorious works. You can't really go wrong here if you are looking for fine and highly listenable examples of Baroque choral music. You get 23 pieces altogether (11 in the Gloria and 12 in the Magnificat) and each is typically 2 or 3 minutes long. It's the audio equivalent of a string of pearls. My personal favourites are 'Laudamus te' and 'Domine Fili unigenite' from the Gloria. A lovely recording at a bargain price - buy it!
