This is a wonderful recording of a masterpiece, probably the greatest work of Rachmaninov and one of the outstanding musical works of the twentieth century. Before this recording appeared, there was a choice. On one side were linguistically idiomatic performances, generally bass-heavy, from Russian or Bulgarian choirs, who could cope with the language and provide the deep bass tone that was essential, but sometimes struggled in other registers. On the other side were Western choirs who struggled with the language and failed miserably to provide the weight of bass that the music demanded. This is very enjoyable, and Dido's 'When I am laid in the cold ground' is especially moving, especially at this time of year! (England in a damp November!)

After watching the film, then buying the book and film guide, this was was a natural choice. I have listened to it more than any other CD in the collection. The orchestral tracks are exremely well composed and performed. There are tracks from the original soundtrack too (including La Scala's spontanious opera songs). A classic!

Luciano Pavarotti at his absolute best, which is truly something to hear. Renata Scotto may not be everyone's ideal Mimi- she looks too much the sturdy healthy sort of girl, and her acting is terrible, but this is quibbling. For those who remember only the later, concert Pavarotti, or for those who have been disappointed with his acting in other things, this is the one to watch to see what all the fuss is about. I would recommend skipping the Tony Randall [?] intro, its a bit cringe-worthy.

If you want to get to know the Gershwins' 'Porgy and Bess', this is a brilliant version to watch. Willard White is just incredible, and of course Gershwin's music throughout is just sublime. Seeing 'Summertime' (you know the one) in the context of the show sheds a completely different light on it. The only annoyance was the poor miming (mouths and voices out of synch), and for me it was a big annoyance. But I still found myself moved from time to time.
