Erik Satie, 1866-1925, French.

"The musician is perhaps the most modest of animals, but he is also the proudest. It is he who invented the sublime art of ruining poetry". (Erik Satie).

This Naxos CD is aimed at the beginner or occasional classical music listener and aims to provide a cross section of the entire works of Satie on a single CD of around one hour duration. It's difficult of course to achieve a satisfactory representation of a composer's lifetime achievements in such short time, but this CD does achieve its aim in that it offers an affordable introduction to Satie which may enable the listener to either pursue these works further, or simply to collect the entire Naxos `Best Of' range. ... I bought this set on the strength of several glowing reviews on Amazon (British and American) and on ClassicsToday, although I already have the complete cycle several times over: by various conductors and orchestras (Haitink, Chailly, Solti, Sieghart, Bernstein, Rattle, Haenchen, Neumann, Inbal etc.) and the box sets by Edo de Waart on RCA/Cobra (good, but now out of print; if it's available it's rediculously over priced), Emil Tabakov on Cappricio (quite good, it's budget price making it a great bargain) and Michael Gielen on Hänssler (outstanding modernist view).
I relish this set because of the wonderfully warm sound quality (listen to those very deep basses in the "Alles Vergängliche" chorus at the end of the 8th symphony), the non ... Read More:

This is a really lovely recording - the singing is sublime, the music is wonderful, tuneful but eccentrically Britten.

This as hands down one of the most astonishing recordings I have ever heard. I bought it knowing a bit about tango, and a bit about Piazzolla, but regardless of that, this is incredible music. The music itself is gorgeous - dark, beautiful, ominous, brooding and deeply passionate. The playing is beyond compare - laser precise and yet at the same time gritty and rough. This is very much a band effort, and what a band - they swing, caress and whip up thunder.

Apparently this angered the tango purists in Argentina, as did much of Piazzollas output, and I can see why - this is modern, vital music, with clear influences from jazz, classical music and even the rush of punk. I must emphasise that you do not need to know much about tango to enjoy ... Read More:

Richard Wagner, 1813-1883, German.

"Richard Wagner, a musician who wrote music which is better than it sounds". (Richard Wagner).

Visually, this is a real feast! However, there is much to be desired musically. Behrens is slightly coy, and her voice is not rich enough for the part: she is so much better suited to Strauss and Wagner. MacNeil is great - really menacing - but at 63 years of age, his sense of pitch fails unless he is following an orchestral line. Domingo's strengths as Cavaradossi are well known, and he does not let us down here. The conducting is exemplary, the orchestra magnificent. I very much enjoyed watching the video - I had had it for years, and never given it a viewing. But in the final analysis, I feel a younger, surer Scarpia and a more Italianate Floria are needed.

The first surprising thing about this set is the fact that debussy only wrote this relatively small amount of solo piano music. The second is that so few of these are what one might call "famous".

Yes, there's good old Flaxen Hair and Arabesque and Golliwog's Cake Walk, and so on ... but you also get a host of utterly surreal and enchanting pieces such as his Estampes and Images.

Playing the whole set through from start to finish is a suitably intense way to penetrate Debussy's unusual mind, as each piece is completely different from all the others.

The quality of playing is superb, as the pianist seems to have captured something of the period and situation in which they were written - an admirable achievement.

The box they ... Read More:

It goes without saying that if you like Canon, you'll love this CD. It contains fifteen delicious variations of the Canon (and one Gigue). There are one or two versions that are bound to become your favourites. For one of the most repetitive songs around, I'm amazed to say I've never tired of this song. You know where it's going, but it's still relaxing and uplifting, whether as background music or to listen mindfully (try listening through headphones to feel ultra calm and wonderful!). Would probably make great background music at a party or wedding reception, shop etc. This CD is a regular feature on my CD player. It's great value for money too. There should be more like it!

The excellent first review says it nearly all. A few footnotes: Don't be scared off by the fact that it's Boulez conducting. Yes, his style here as well as elsewhere is very precise and analytical, and his interpretation predictably stresses the forward looking aspects of Janacek's music. Mackerras, on CD, is warmer, maybe more emotional. But this opera fares very well with Boulez's approach. The music is shattering, and does not need more "emotion" laid on. And yes, it is great to have the different musical lines and instruments brought out so clearly, the music sounds like it was written yesterday. Don't be put off either by the opera's reputation of not having a plot worthy of the name. True, it is not Otello, but it is a mosaic of dramatic stories, some of them linked, ... Read More:
