I purchased this based on my experience of Brahms performed on Gypsy Campfire by 101 Strings Orchestra and I found it flat and dull. The 101 strings version is far more lively and has greater feeling. The reviews here also swayed my decision and once again I was disapointed. Obviously classical music is defined by the performer more than anything, as indeed with any other music I guess. If possible try before you buy. That said it's still a pleasant album.

A non-Italian 'Aida' that ranks head and shoulders above many of its competitors, this is a performance to cherish. Solti's grip on the orchestra is total and he presents an atmospheric and urgent interpretation of the opera. The end of Act 1 scene 2 is electric with religious fervour.There, Vickers rides the full orchestra with ease and elsewhere is a committed and moving Radames - not everyone's favourite tenor maybe but an artist of blazing intensity. Price builds her part through mostly vocal means, and what a voice it was - controlled and secure throughout its range with a distinctive smoky timbre that is perfectly appropriate to the role. This recording was my first introduction to Stockhausen. Very clear demonstration of the birth of techno/electronic music and therefore a good buy for anybody tracing musical roots. The movement, depth and shear strangeness of Stockhausen's Kontakte makes you either profoundly shocked at his genius or wonder what all the fuss is about. In more recent times this piece greatly influenced Irmin Schmidt (who trained under Stockhausen and formed CAN) and Richie Hawtin (aka Plastikman. 5/5 for pure genius

There are so many good recordings of "Aida" available and I own - and play - eight of them, but I keep coming back to this one as my favourite. This might partly be for purely personal reasons: it was one of the first sets I bought when as a nineteen year old I was just discovering opera and I still recall the sense of transported wonder I first experienced listening to that magical, moonlit Nile music; then just after that I was able to hear most of the artists on this recording live at Covent Garden and that cemented my preference for this version. This is a wonderful recording of what must rank as one of the most awesome pieces of music ever written. Personally I can listen to this 3 times in a row, and will have goose pimples all the way through, for 3 hours solid, every time. This music is just so jaw-droppingly, humongously, enormously, epically BIG!!! If this music was a painting it would cover a canvas the size of a football field. If this music was a sculpture it would dwarf the Eifel tower. It is truly incomprehensible. Luckily you don't have to comprehend, it's enough to fasten your seat belt, turn up the volume, and prepare to take leave of planet humdrum for an unforgettable ride. This DVD features a performance of Otto Schenk's traditionalist 1993 production at the Met. The performance was filmed live in December 2001. A beaming James Levine clearly enjoys himself in the orchestra pit as he commences the opening prelude, and that smile of joy is prevalent throughout the following 290 minutes. You have to have the volume up above 1/2 way to get the full benefit of the solos. That said, it is a wonderful masterpiece, performed beautifully - the sort of CD that it will take a long time to get bored with! It comes with the words, so you can sing along - but like me, you probably already know them! I am especially pleased that I decided to buy this CD.

I have been listening to Bach's violin concerti on and off for over 20 years. And, I simply never tire of them. There is something around technical brilliance, profusion of melodies and balance; a kind of perfection. This particular recording is top notch.

I love the Goldbergs, but never really heard them (and that includes the incomparable Gould) until I heard this. You will never tire of it. One problem: you cannot ignore it when it's on, so don't plan to listen while doing anything else!
