I don't think this marvellous 8CD set by Mitsuko Uchida and the ECO can be bettered. It is not quite a complete recording of all the piano concerti, but incorporates all of the concerti on the four double CDs issued under the Philips Duo label. Only a few of the very early concerti are missing (nos. 1-4, 7 and 10 to be precise) and all the great ones are here.

I have enthused about Uchida's Complete Mozart Piano Sonatas Mozart: The Piano Sonatas and about the Concerti issued as Duo discs. Uchida has a real empathy with Mozart, I think, and you get the sense of love and joy in the music combined with magnificent musicianship making this a marvellous set and outstanding value. She is crisp and sensitive in the quicker outer ... Read More:

I bought this cd for one track - Night on Bald Mountian. This one piece of music is so inventive, so impressive, so invigorating, that I would happily pay this amount for a cd with just this one track on it.
But it gets better! Not only does it include this fantastic track, it has two versions of the track, plus the entirety of "Pictures at an Exhibition" another wonderful treat. It also icludes two of his lesser known pieces, that while don't measure up to these other goliaths of classical music, are worth listening to.

Mussorgsky at his best. I recommend you play "night on bald mountain" very loud on a good stereo system - only then can you truly appreciate the brilliance.

As so often with recordings raved about by the UK critical establishment, I found this a big let-down. This performance is no doubt very scholarly and accurate, but to me it's precious, petite and ultimately soporific. The booklet says they wanted to create the freshness and surprise of a premiere; for me they achieved the opposite.

If you REALLY want a Messiah with absolutely superb diction, try out Radu and the Ama Deus Ensemble from American Amazon.

The two jazz suites featured on this album are more Tchaikovsky meets Strauss than jazz. Indeed, Shosta subtitled his second as a suite for promenade orchestra and the writer of the sleeve notes (Shostaphile Elizabeth Wilson) openly concedes that the composer had his eye on numerous future renditions performed by Red Army bands. Having said that, there are some interesting and entertaining items contained within the suites, brilliantly orchestrated.

The rendition of the first piano concerto on this CD is the best in my collection: probably a trifle to brisk for some, it is nevertheless precise and disciplined.

The overall sound of the CD is up to the usual Decca standards

Mitsuko Uchida succeeds splendidly in conveying great feeling as well as high energy and vital power in these definitive readings of some of Schubert's greatest piano works. The sonata in A minor D845 and the Sonatas in C major D840 "Reliquie" (unfinished), C minor D958, and B-flat major D 960 are particulary well conceived and executed within a collection which seems almost flawless and which also includes the 4 Impromptus D935, the 4 Impromptus D 899 on the final disc, as well as 6 German Dances D 820, 12 German Dances D 790 and Moments Musicaux D 780. Definitive and profoundly spiritual and penetrating interpretations and performances.

I have performed this piece as a member of the chorus in King's College Chapel and witnessed a superb performance at the Proms. I have also listened to this particular performance many times. This work is far less well known than "Gerontius" but for me (as for Boult) this is the greater work. I suspect that it is less performed than it should be because of the need for six first-class soloists. At every point, I find this strange and haunting work absolutely inspired. Perhaps the dramatic temperature cools towards the end of the first part, but this is necessary for the gradual building of tension through the extraordinary meditation of Judas (certainly the "hero" of this work) to the stunning apotheosis in the Transfiguration of Christ. Which is almost ... Read More:

I had the good fortune to sing this work as a school child in Canterbury Cathedral in UK, and have had a soft spot for it ever since. This marvellous recording comes much closer than any other I have heard to capturing the atmosphere of chamber style choral music sung in unique acoustics of a large European Cathedral. In my view, this is one of the truly great choral music recordings that should feature in any collection. Highly recommended too if you are new to this type of music: this is a nicely matched collection of beautifully sung accessible choral music. Enjoy!

Since the steady resurgence in popularity of Bach's music there has become an increasing number of Brandenburg Concerto recordings to chose from. Just like the numerous versions of Beethoven symphonies, there are now an abundance of these popular Bach works on CD, which on the one hand gives a variety of interpretations to listen to, but on the other causes confusion when deciding which to choose.

These recordings from 1978/1979 (orchestral suites) and 1982 (Brandenburg's) have been available previously on vinyl (the suites) and since 1988 on CD (Brandenburg's).

Of the many recordings now available, these remain one of my favourites. The musicianship of The English Concert, Trevor Pinnock (harpsichord) and Simon Standage (violin) ... Read More:

These three quartets are the best that Schubert wrote and can compare with anything written by anyone at any time. Also here is the glorious 'Quartettsatz'. The Quartetto Italiano could justly claim to be one the three or four best string quartets in the world in their time, and Phillips always did them proud, so really there is nothing but excellence here. The Italians' approach is measured and very sonorous, everything is bang in tune (this is not something that can be taken for granted, even with the most stellar quartets), and it seems to me that they plumb the depths here. The opening of the G Major Quartet, arguably the greatest of the three (and the least often played), is just mesmeric - that whispery violin figure above the tremolando, so frail, so human, ... Like Bach? Like Electronica?
If you do, you need to buy this platinum selling album.

An album of straight classical keyboard virtuosity in experimental timbres.
Before this album, nobody had ever heard of a "synthesizer".
After this album, everybody knew the name Moog.(Rhymes with Vogue!)

Wendy Carlos? Genius! Pure genius.

There aren't that many genuinely seminal albums - but this is one of the very most original and best.
