The Playing of Frank & Carl is as expected 100%. Even today, playing of this calibre has not been matched, never mind surpassed. My only complaint is that the percussion ( Drums) were,at times, too loud for the two virtuoso soloists, this apart, Frank & Carl deliver 79 minutes of sheer Trombone pleasure, both players jazz inventive solos and technique are awesome. This CD is most definitely one for any serious trombonists collection. Happy listening, Nicholas Cooper. ( Amatuer Trombonist )

I first listened to this music on my father's original vinyl, when I was a child. Over the years, I've since bought my own copy of the vinyl as well as the CD. I'm not going to get into any technical sound differences as they're not really material to me in this instance. The music is variously haunting and uplifting, and it will certainly transport you to another time and place when you sit and listen to it. And it does deserve quiet sitting and listening, if it's the first time you've heard it. If you can read music and are so inclined, hunting out a piano transcription and reading (or even playing along, if you're talented!) as you listen is quite a fun exercise.

A very good recording from December 1978, further proof that Baker hadn't lost it (in fact, he would continue to record some of his best albums in the years after this). The interplay with Phil Markowitz on piano and Jean-François Jenny-Clark on bass is wonderful; Richie Beirach's "Broken Wing" and Wayne Shorter's "Brown Eyes" have rarely ever been played more beautifully. Re-released in the very competitively priced "Jazz in Paris" series, this is more than well worth its money.
