101.Time in by: Dave Brubeck
June 03, 1997
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Time in
I got this CD as part of a three disc box set with Time out and Time further out. I wouldn't say I like it more than the other two, but I does have a far gentler quality, being mostly in simple time signatures - exc. Time in, which is a cheeky wink to the previous album - Time Out. The tracks are beautifully played by Brubeck and Desmond, many of them are slower and more relaxing, yet very clean and crisp, and big Dave's big hands play those big full chords with ease. Technically very good. I especially like the last number, thought the splicing of two tracks to make the final edit is obvious as the pitch changes slightly. Still very enjoyable and one for a quiet evening in with or without your ladyfriend. I wish more jazz music was like this.

This is really a heartwarming and joyful music. The setting of these three great players in a drumless trio makes one wonder why there isn't more music like this in the jazz-literature. Although Baker is rather fragile in his playing, he is here at one of his most enjoyable settings and his singing has never sounded as delightful. Nothing grounbreaking going on but simply a feel-good record the whole way through.

I bought this as an LP and played it heaps, now only 2nd or 3rd to Tropicana and Live in London but it is the essence of Kenton and much has never been played better, Southern Scandal, Painted Rythym to mention just 2! Worth the money over the Hallmark poor transfers.

Although they hold some nostalgia value for me, you by no means have to be a fan of the Charlie Brown television specials to enjoy this CD. The music is simple - jazzy piano arrangements with a small backing band - but is, for the most part, delightfully refreshing. I find it makes great upbeat working music, although some of the tracks descend into elevator muzak territory.

Music : West Side Story
A truly amazing album! The sound quality and stereo effect is brilliant by today's standards, but this recording was made in 1961! After listening to this album, one wonders why Stan didn't stick with the Mellophoniums (they were only there for three years). Despite the inherent intonation problems with the instruments themselves and the "political" problems they caused within the band, the sound that their players make on this album adds a new and unique colour to the fabulous arrangements of Bernstein's music. I am sure that with a bit more work, the Mellophonium could have been refined and become a permanent fixture in many a brass line-up. And let's not forget the rest of the band! Their playing is tight and accurate with brilliant solos from ... Read More:

If the earlier 3 star review had predated my purchase of this work, I'd have possibly been swayed off. Thankfully it didn't. Put aside Train "sound-alike" observations, "no groove" and other negative views of that reviewer and form your own opinion by listening and re-listening to this classic Evans' work. Listen to it as a whole. If you find an extraordinary groove and a compelling and hypnotic richly structured soundscape, interjected with sympathetic structured solos fitting seamlessly in Evans' orchestral magic, then welcome! Maybe it will, in time, find its way into your Desert Island shortlist.
