115.Helen Merrill With Clifford Brown & Gil Evans by: Helen Merrill Clifford Brown Gil Evans

Music : Helen Merrill With Clifford Brown & Gil Evans
Originally recorded in December, 1954, when Helen Merrill was only twenty-five, this recording, now digitally remastered and re-released, was her professional breakthrough. With Clifford Brown on trumpet, arrangements by Quincy Jones, who was himself only twenty-one, and fantastic back-up (Jimmy Jones on piano is especially notable), Helen Merrill was free to unloose her jazz interpretations and her explore her dramatic talent with lyrics. With a lush voice which still retains the sweetness of youth, she offers new variations on familiar melodic lines, provides sensitive interpretations of sad songs, and happily jives to the upbeat.

Billy Holiday's "Don't Explain," one of the saddest songs ever written, is brilliantly interpreted ... Read More:

116.A Boy Named Charlie Brown by: Vince Guaraldi
June 10, 1996
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Music : A Boy Named Charlie Brown
Walrus-moustachieod pianist Guaraldi turned in a great trio set with bassist Monty Budwig and drummer Colin Bailey for this session. Beautifully inventive, melodic and minimal, it's the perfect musical foil for the mordant quasi-Zen philosophy that underpins Schulz's fabulous cartoon creations.

Most people will instantly recognize 'Linus & Lucy', but all the music here is well worth hearing. Even though this music may not necessarily have accompanied the episodes of Charlie Brown/Peanuts that many of us will have seen, it still succeeds in evoking that mixture of melancholy and joy that the cartoon aslo subtly succeeded in capturing. Also, and importantly if you're considering buying this CD, like Curtis Mayfield's 'Superfly' soundtrack, ... Read More:

I wonder if Art is having a laugh with us all about the album title "Smack-up" because most jazz fans know what Pepper became famous for as well as playing the Saxaphone ?
That aside, this album sees Pepper in prime form showing shades of Charlie Parker and Jackie McLean in his phrasing and tone.
The title track is the pick of the bunch which is a lively up-tempo swinger that really showcases the altoists talents.
He is accompanied by Jack Sheldon who plays no more than an adequate trumpet in the style of a lot of the West coast musicians of the day.Pete Jolly contributes some nicely swinging solos on piano but the show here belongs to Pepper.
Quality stuff.

This 8 track CD consists of 7 recorded in December 1979 and 1 in May 1980.
Zoot and Ray Sims are joined by Jimmy Rowles (pno) John Heard (b) and Shelly Manne (dms). The last two are replaced by Michael Moore and John Clay on the 1980 track. This is relaxed high class modern/mainstream jazz of the highest quality. My heart sank when I read "Ray Sims - trombone and vocals". Thankfully, only the last track has a vocal and is fairly forgetable hence 4 rather than 5 stars. I saw Zoot Sims in concert a couple of times in the late 1950s and have always been a fan. I found it interesting that on this, a much later date, his tone to be more breathy. I think this is the first and possibly only time that the Sims brothers recorded together. They sound ...
