1962 was Brubecks's greatest year-when his music went to the masses. It fits in well with the Golden Age of the Instrumental and Bossa Nova USA is the business
His chart career began in 1961 with Take 5-which like some of the followups had been recorded in the later 50s but not known to that many unless they were into cool jazz.
Brubeck would spawn the Vince Guaraldi Trio and the Ramsey Lewis Trio-other jazzmen who suddenly found themselves on the charts-though with the latter it was more planned.
In the 50s Brubeck cut an album called Dave Digs Disney and became one of the few jazzmen to immortalise Alice In Wonderland-this album though is only available in the UK as an import

Music : In a Silent Way: the Complete in a Silent Way Sessions
I came to this record via Sly Stone and Headhunters era Herbie Hancock. Miles welded Funk to Jazz and you can hear him itching to push the envelope, aided and abetted by bright young things, the afore mentioned Hancock, Shorter, McLaughlin, Corea et al. There's a dark brooding undercurrent to all of the music, reflecting I think the America of the Black Panthers, Vietnam, the fight for equality. This music has periods of calm followed by periods of harsh beauty. I don't understand the technical aspects as to how the music was created but I do know that it "grabs" you like all great art does. (And it is extremely Funky)

Neither Bill or Stan were happy with these recordings but finally approved their release. Elvin certainly deserves a mention on the cover as he makes a substantial contribution.

137.On a Misty Night: the Prestige Sessions by: Chet Baker

Music : On a Misty Night: the Prestige Sessions
In this collection we have Prestige recordings of the mid-60's.Baker had just returned from his troubles in Europe, and under manager Richard Carpenter made a few recordings under Prestige simular to Miles Davis, hence the title names.Chet is on flugelhorn on all recordings,no singing, and George Coleman is on tenor saxophone.
This cd as a harder edge to Chet's sound and contains 5 titles from Cool Burnin' cd and 6 from Boppin' cd.
I recommend these recordings highly.
As a note,Chet was next to go on to record some very bland stuff for World Pacific,in the same studios he had recorded is legendary 50's Pacific recordings.A great shame and wasted talent.
