This is a wonderful recording which will satisfy jazz fans of all persuasions. Furthermore, this is the perfect introduction to Dolphy as a jazz virtuoso without being thrown in the 'deep end'. Dolphy is in his element with these tuneful Ellington classics and plays beautifully on flute, sax and clarinet. The 'lightness' of the sound sometimes hides the endeavour and accomplishment of Dolphy's soloing. I used to listen to the original in the 50's in the Sixth Form and later had a cassette copy which was lost in time. Listening to this is like meeting up with an old friend - the memories just flood back. We always knew that Andre Previn was special, and he has proved it. A brilliant record, still as good as it was in 1956.

This disc was quite a surprise. It was bought on a whim when I was looking for something to play in the car - yet this disc rewards a lot of careful listening. For anyone interested in jazz of the 1960's and 70's, Chet Baker is (or should be) a familiar name. His trumpet style and originality deserve more attention. The tracks seem to cover a wide part of his career. From 1963 and his appearance with Miles Davies to the end in Amsterdam in 1975, just 12 years later, this disc covers it. Chet plays classics such as "So What" and "Milestones" with great musicality. The other tracks also reveal a great talent. There isn't a dull track. This is my favourite Jazz record ever, the musicians are all incredible and every song on the album is wonderful. I found this album by mistake and I've been trying to find other similar sounding jazz albums but none have ever come close to "the Italian sessions".
