This is my third Jimmy Giuffre CD and I was not expecting the content at all. It is an experimental album of unusual arrangements with unusual combinations of instruments, I would not normally buy this sort of album but having done so I listened to it repeatedly and suprise suprise it grew on me. The liner notes quote Giuffre's comments on the various tracks and as he wrote five and arranged all of them it is interesting knowing his goals, it certainly helped me understand the music. But it is interesting rather than enjoyable.

This is the one to play when you need a little holiday peace and joy. Put the kids to bed, fix yourself a hot cocoa and settle in for an hour to get centered again with this wonderful CD. I own a lot of Christmas music, but this seems to be the one I turn to again and again - it's nostalgic, joyful, exuberant and peaceful, all at the same time -- just like Dave Brubeck himself. You'll see what I mean when you first play it: it's magic.

I used to listen to the original in the 50's in the Sixth Form and later had a cassette copy which was lost in time. Listening to this is like meeting up with an old friend - the memories just flood back. We always knew that Andre Previn was special, and he has proved it. A brilliant record, still as good as it was in 1956.

Stan Getz never better than when playing Bossa Nova! This is basically the lot including several different versions of the same tune. Pricey, and 4 instead of 3 CD's which it could have been, purists will still want the full collection. Others should seek out the excellent long one CD set on Verve, Jazz Masters 53 which has much of the best from his Bossa Nova years. Whichever, the CD remasters from LP are awesome and I just play these over and over though occasionally I tire of Astrud's plaintive wail, where it occurs - though not her cheeky telephone song, (not on Jazz Masters but here and elsewhere).
