Great CD to enjoy when you need to relax. Most of these tracks have a magic within. Why only 4 stars you ask? The jazz borders with the easy listening here and that kind of stopped me from giving 5 stars. In any case: buy with confidence, it will not disappoint you.

For me the main attraction of the Brubeck Quartet was Paul Desmond. I bought the Mulligan/Desmond disc to get free postage! It is without doubt the luckiest buy I have made in years. I love Mulligan anyway, but Desmond has so much to say on this. Why didn't he do more? Buy it and play it, all sixty eight minutes of it, over and over.

Part of the film's success (see my separate film review),is this soundtrack. Featuring Dinah Washington, it is perfectly in keeping with the film, complimenting the story and brilliant acting, without ever dominating as so many soundtracks do. If you've seen the film and loved it, then buy this CD - it will conjure up the scenes in your mind's eye and take you back to Francesca's farm in Iowa. Perfect...

6 out of 5 Stars The only thing I will regret in my life is not being able to see and hear this band live in person in London back in February 1972. I had the Decca Phase Four stereo 2 LP set and when I visited Brittan in 2005 I played them again but found the poor balance detracted from the thought of bringing them back with me to Australia and buying a turntable to play them again. Now this is no longer necessary and it seems with no to do Michael Dutton has cleaned up the often very poor balance Decca went to press with. So much so those of you who have never heard the LP's will just think it's a bit closely miked but it seemed to me it was well over the top of the tape's dynamic range especially the very fiery numbers ... I first discovered Marty Paich backing Mel Torme with a medium sized group, his arrangements really impressed me and now he is one of my favourite arrangers. Get him to lead some of the top West Coast jazz men at their peak in 1959, playing well known standards and you have the right mix for a great album. His arrangements are pure magic, recognisable as the tune but with adequate space for some wonderful solos. The liner gives all the soloists for each track and provides some useful historical information. Sadly the recording engineers remains anonymous. If you like sweet swing this should really be in your collection.

This is the coolest record I've ever heard: it can sooth you no matter how wound up you get. The Modern Jazz Quartet, playing keyboards, vibraharp, double-bass and percussion have produced this little album of nine separate tracks. Each track is based on a tune, mostly from the works of Bach (though there are a couple of new ones), which is developed into about single length. They capture completely in spirit what the composer Bach has come to mean to a modern audience - both the serenity and the emotional depth. I'm sure I've heard these tracks more than once as movie scores (or at least the scores were heavilly influenced by them). This recording seems to reveal something new to me everytime I listen to it. Halls seemingly effortless flow of beautiful melodic and rhytmic statements are held aloft by Carters impecable time as ideas are tossed playfully from four strings to six and then into the ether, where they hang like organic sculptures to be viewed by whomever has the patience to look a little deeper than surface level. Hall and Carter have opened a portal with this recording, that allows us to view beauty and simplicity previously unavailable in this dimension.
