Last week I was at a beach party in Portugal where the band got up and sang Tu Vuo' Fa L'Americano. Folk were divided - some running away from the 'insolent noise' to quote the film - others, me included rejoiced! Quite simply I've become a jazz disciple because of this body of work.

Yes, this is a beautiful and logical aglomeration of jazz giants: those who are the giants of modern jazz (Mulligan, Getz) have deep roots in the jazz tradition;
it is actually quite fascinating to hear Stan Getz on the opening number: he actually adds some of Lester Young style wailing to his cool tenor sound! That's quite compatible with the general mood of the song, with Harry "Sweets" Edison, in his prime, and really swinging rhythm section, consisting of Oscar Peterson's trio (with great Ray Brown having some opportunities to solo on this album and Herb Ellis doing some very effective comping), plus great Louis Bellson on the drums...

The basic principle of this album leans towards swing rather than modern jazz, but modern ... Read More:

59.The Classic Concert Live: Carnegie Hall 1982 by: Mel Torme

Music : The Classic Concert Live: Carnegie Hall 1982
This recently discovered 1982 recording of the Carnegie Hall performance of Mel Torme, George Shearing, and Gerry Mulligan is the only known recording of these three giants performing together, and what a performance is! Mulligan's fifteen-piece orchestra connects the artists' solos and fills the recording with atmospheric effects, haunting beats, and dramatic accents. Torme's evolution from crooner of beautiful melodies, as he was in the 1977 "London Sessions," to a full-out jazz performer just five years later, is obvious through his relaxed scatting and his use of his voice as a jazz instrument--on a par with Mulligan's sax and Shearing's piano.

Containing all the patter of a live performance, the CD gets off to a rousing start with ... Read More:

This was actually one of the first (proper) jazz records I ever heard and I have recently bought it on CD. The MJQ were a strange outfit because many thought the format wouldn,t work (no horns, two similar sounding instruments - vibes and piano, playing Bach! and Christmas carols!!). However, my recent listening of this lovely recording only serves to reinforce the thoughts I had when I first heard it. These guys can swing but they do it with such an effortless grace that you actually feel yourself moving along with them. The CD also contains some classic jazz standards (Round Midnight, Night in Tunisia) that listeners new to jazz will find accessible - Night in Tunisia is my all time favourite example of pianist John Lewis's effortless way with ...
