2005 was a whacky year even by Ryan Adams standards, as he released three albums, one of which was a double, in the space of around eight months. Luckily for all concerned, they got better as they went on, and he certainly saved the best for last.

29 is a kind of sequel to Love Is Hell, but rather than having the sprawling depression of that album's production it's more reminiscent of Heartbreaker's stripped sound, only amped up even more. Most of the songs were recorded by Adams alone with a guitar or piano and then overdubbed to a very minor extent. Instrumentation is spare and production is all but absent, all wise decisions for an album like this.

Whether you believe that Adams is as tortured as this or not - as ... Read More:

A magnificant album which sees Young at possibly his peak, will be
difficult to follow, a landmark.

Wonderful, infectious, unaffected, honest, direct, delicious, good old-fashioned, wholly entertaining, aural experience. Just driven up to Edinburgh with this blasting on CD. Four of us - we all loved it. A teeny teeny bit evocative of the great George Melley in live performance -in nicest possible way (powerful immediacy and gusto, we mean). Heard it on R4's 'Loose Ends' on Saturday 2nd August and ordered at once. BTW recommended on the cover to turn volume up to max for maximum enjoyment. We did.

I always had a problem with Country as a youngster, growing up as I did in a working class English town and hooked on Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Sabbath. Though I could listen to Johnny Cash, some of the female country stars of the time (Tammy Wynette etc) really grated on me.

I bought this collection on a whim while working out in California a couple of years ago. This was the first time I really listened to her as a recording artist in her own right, though I was familiar with her work with Gram Parsons and her excellent backing vocals on Dylan's Desire.

I must say that this album blew me away. Her voice is totally exquisite and it is little wonder that her talents been in such demand over the years. Though The Grateful Dead first ... Read More:

Alison Krauss has one of the beautiful voices in modern music. But this album shows Union Station to be so much more than her stunning vocals. The stand out feature of this album is the musicianship of all members of the band. The addition of jerry douglas dobro has added a new layer to their compositions. This album is simply a must.

Lucinda Williams' song Side Of The Road is one of the most extraordinary, beautiful and haunting songs I've ever heard, and some of the tracks on her last CD came very close to that quality in their ability to take you into the heart of somebody else's world with feeling. But for my money there's nothing to touch her best work on World Without Tears. To me the song writing all sounds a bit labored and tired, the delivery and voice uncertain as to what she's aiming for and the quasi-rap just plain wrong for both her voice and the material. I don't care what the other reviewers say, I would advise you give this a miss.

Young kicked off his solo career with a very low key affair. The whole pace of the album is dictated to by the opening jaunty instrumental The Emperor of Wyoming which has a definite country feel to it. The key to the success of a first album is a positive answer to the question "will this artist improve?" With Young it was definitely a yes as you could hear the beginnings of the golden career that was to follow.

So this is a decent stab at things, but there was much better to follow. It includes some pseudo classical twiddly bits and, like on so many Young albums, the sum of the whole is slightly fractured, varying from the prettiness of "Here We Are in the Years," which for me is the outstanding track, to the rambling "The Last Trip to Tulsa" which at nine ... Whilst watching the film, I always thought that Johny Cash sang the OST, In fact it was Joaquin Phoenix. Ring of Fire and Walk the Line are classics , and are enhanced by Phoenix's rendition. Likewise, Reese Witherspoon's rendition of June Carter is equally impressive.

martha wainwright proves on this album that despite all of her vaunted background she is a true original. the songs show great craft, especially BMFA which is perfectly written. and her voice is a wonder. it has the flexibility of mary margaret o'hara's voice and the emotional vastness of jane siberry but is also something completely hers. its really exhilirating the way it can just take off in the middle of a song and go wherever it likes yet still make complete musical sense.

for many years i've been grieving the fact that mary margaret o'hara hasn't been making music but with this album the gap is filled. but she isn't a copycat. like any true talent this musical vision is completely martha's own. and it seems to have sprung complete from her in a way which is very rare. ...
