Jacksonville City Nights was the second of three albums Ryan released in one year (2005), helping to cement his reputation as one of the most prolific songwriters of recent years. It's always been a point of discussion (argument?) amongst Ryan fans and critics as to whether this is a good or bad thing. In my opinion it's nothing but good. Most artists leave you waiting years between releases and often then give you something disappointing. This isn't the case with Ryan, whose writing is always insightful and always a delight to listen to.

JCN is no exception. It's definitely his most 'country' solo album; as other reviewers have pointed out it's often closer to his days in Whiskeytown. Don't be put off if you're not into country ... Read More:

A fitting tribute to a phenomenal voice! A brilliantly comprehensive collection of his well known hits and some real gems with the inclusion of previously unrealeased tracks. This is a must have for all Roy fans both young and old. His voice is sublime. His music, together with The Beatles and Elvis Presley, Legendary and he is a huge and incremental part of our musical heritage. This box set helps to let that legend live on. A MUST HAVE FOR ANY GENUINE MUSIC FAN.

I don't know what kind of drugs Neil was (or wasn't) on during the making of Trans but it certainly makes for an interesting listen.
The majority of this album is odd in that Neil sings through a vocoder, which makes him sound like a robot, and the music is mostly electronic and dark - Kraftwerk style. There are 3 songs where Neils voice is left alone and he uses an acoustic guitar, they seem out of place here which does break the overall mood but they are still good songs. Little Thing Called Love, the only single, is a catchy little opener but not an indication of the dark electro onslaught that follows. Hold On To Your Love is a light breezy tune that gives the album a little break and Like an Inca is a great closer with an irresistable hook. The ... Read More:

The Byrds underwent many line-up changes but the line-up that recorded the classic Sweethearts of the rodeo album didn't last long even by Byrds' standards. Two of its key members, Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman, quit and formed the Flying Burrito Brothers. This twofer contains their first two albums.

The first album, Gilded Palace of Sin, is regarded as a landmark album in the evolution of country-rock, almost as important as Sweethearts of the rodeo. Despite the label country rock, this album actually contains a few soulful ballads. On this album, the group comprised Gram Parsons, Chris Hillman, Sneeky Pete Kleinow and Chris Ethridge. Most of the songs are originals, though the album also includes brilliant covers of Dark end of the street and Do ... Read More:

I'm 19, and I love Don Williams. I admit that I didn't hear of him until a few months ago, please don't hate me. I was sitting in ront of the computer in our living room, when I heard some really nice music coming from the kitchen where my mum was. I really like country music, especially Marty Robbins, Dolly Parton, and Lonestar, and I asked her who it was. She replied Don Williams, I went back to the computer, logged on the internet and bought this CD, and his love sogns cd, which really was a comfort when I was going through a bad patch after moving to university. 'Tears of the loney, keep falling all the time, Tears of the lonely never dry.' What a sad song! But it isn't on this cd, so if you want to hear it, you'll have to listen to the love songs cd.

My wife has long since banned the playing of Neil Young CD's in the car. She complains that he sounds whinney, and it makes her want to get out and walk. My response is that she's the sort of person who would regard a Picasso painting as being 'not very lifelike'. However, upon hearing this particular album, I concede that my argumant may be slightly flawed.

It isn't that the songs are bad, I personally prefer the folkier, more reflective side of Neil Young, and in this regard Prairie Wind contains some of his best stuff for years, but the fact remains that he has written cheques here that his vocal chords cannot honour.

Songs like 'Falling Off The Face Of The Earth' and 'It's A Dream' are beautiful ballards but they get high, higher perhaps ... Read More:

I love Ryan Adams and Whiskeytown. There is something completely compelling about this record. At a stage when the band was on the verge of breaking up something magic happened and they produced what is probably the most complete alt-country (I'm not using the term Americana!!) release of it's time. I'm not going to pick any track because there are no turkeys on the great record.

It also comes with a 70 min extra CD of out-takes and unreleased tracks, many of which would put other bands to shame if they had been on the original release. Faultless.

Electric guitar playing does not come any better than this. The seemingly effortless musical mastery of these two legendary players is everything I expected and more when I bought the orginial vinyl versions of these recordings. The only mystery to me is why did they not record together more often? Separately they made marvellous recordings, but together they inspired each other to new heights, as is evident in these tracks. The personal and musical chemistry between Chet and Les is so good that you can hear it not only in their music, but in the little snatches of their conversational camaradie that the recording engineers left on the tapes. The mutual respect between these two musicians has created some of the most beautiful electric guitar recordings ever made, in my opinion. This ... Read More:
