I love this album soooo much! Jenny Lewis's voice is truly amazing, she could sing anything, including addresses from the phone book, and it would sound fantastic. Add to the mix the Watson Twins voices and Im in heaven!

The songs themselves are sheer class, and the lyrics are witty, dry and very clever...

I recommend this album, you wont be disappointed.

"But above all else, I wanted to sing like Roy Orbison."
Or words to that effect. So said the greatest tunesmith of the last 35 years about the greatest pop singer ever. So... he should know. Anyone with any kind of singing pretensions would give some kind of limb to produce a sound like the "Big O," especially if it involved belting out 'Only the Lonely.'

You could just imagine it: - lights out, a windy jersey night, the gramaphone turned up way high...
Play this album with the lights down low, and the volume turned up.
You will find something that transcends 99% of 'popular music' and gives you something that will last for decades. Just ask Bruce Springsteen.

Neil emerged from the dark brilliance of his brooding mid-seventies period to make his most accessible album since Harvest. If he is mostly known for folk, country, and rock, this album is firmly rooted in the folk/country categories, which he does as well as anyone.

This is a very fine album that demonstrates that Young can still be deeply reflective whilst maintaining a mellow - though never bland - approach to the music. As well as a great couple of openers, look out for Four Strong Winds, a country standard that perfectly fits the tone of the album.

This CD is fantastic - a return to form for the First Lady of Country music. From the opening track, the lyrics and music flow easily, and are all likeable, 'catchy' and heartfelt.

Ofcourse they are stand out tracks - the first single, 'Better Get To Living' but also the wonderfully up-lifting 'Jesus & Gravity' and the great 'Shinola' (a track where Dolly gets mad and even!). Plus an amazingly original cover version of 'She Drives Me Crazy', where Dolly add's her own touch of 'crazy'!

Most of the tracks tell a story and so many, it seems, come - possibly - from Dolly's own life experience's, especially the title-track 'Backwoods Barbie'. And top marks have to be given for the art-work of the album - Dolly looks 'the part'.

This album was the first RT studio album I bought. At first I was encouraged, whilst 'Read about Love' clattered off to start the experience in my ear phones, that his band were pedigree rock muso's. Steve Gadd on drums, never bad.

It just got better. The lyrics are inspired, at times funny, tender, emotive, angry, ironic. The flamboyant and oft impressive guitar work provides a source of deep satisfaction through-out the album. 'Psycho Street'; my opinion, a fun listen the first time, I skip it now.

For me the meat on this bone in the Thompson body of work is juicy and nutritious. 'Read About Love', 'I Missunderstood', 'Keep Your Distance', 'You Dream Too Much', 'Why Must I Plead', 'Vincent...' are all tremendous contributions to music. End of. This is ... Read More:

Brenda Lee began her career, aged just eleven, in 1956, but did not have a British hit until 1960. In total, she had twenty-two UK hits between 1960 and 1965 but she had many more than that in America. Generally, the British public seem to prefer her up-tempo rockers while the American public seem to prefer her ballads. I am an exception to the general rule, being a Brit who likes her ballads best, although I enjoy her rocking songs too.

While many classic tracks are missing (for example, I want to be wanted, Emotions, Break it to me gently), this is only a budget-priced album and it does contain all of Brenda's British top ten hits. The biggest of these, Speak to me pretty, was never released as a single in America although I can't think why - it is a great song. Brenda's ... Read More:

So it's fair to say that without Neil Young's "dirty" guitar sound, perhaps grunge may not have been what we know today. From Pearl Jam working extensively with the man to Kurt Cobain quoting him in his suicide note, Neil Young was a driving influence. So in 1990, after the somewhat low key release of Nirvana's "Bleach," it begins to look like a new breed of musician may be coming out of Seattle, perhaps the torch is going to be passed on, and what Young started will be taken to its logical conclusion? Then Neil Young and Crazy Horse strike out with an album that proves that they not only influenced this scene, they can define it too. An album from a band in its third decade that just screams to be recognised as a contemporary of the likes of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, or anyone else you think ... Read More:
