Of all the members that belonged to the Byrds at various stages, Gene was without doubt the most talented when it came to songwriting. He was essentially the creative force in the early Byrds, even though Roger McGuinn got the limelight for being the "Leader" of the group.

I cannot understand how this album did not make it big time when it was originaly released. It is equal to anything put out by Dylan, Neil Young, Lennon or Lou Reed. The truth is that many of us realised what a great artist Gene was, only after his untimely demise. Of course some of us were not even born when this came out!

It is a joy to listen to this masterpiece lying down in bed with the headphones on, so that the rest of world is put to one side ... Read More:

A Celebration In Song
A Celebration In Song finds Olivia in great form vocally and together with her friends she has put together a stong set of thought provoking songs.Anyone who has been through difficult times recently whether emotionally or physically will find something to relate to in these wonderful lyrics.
The highlights are Find A Little Faith with the timeless Sir Cliff Richard - Olivia and Sir Cliff have performed together many times and always blend well , Reckless with John Farrar takes Olivia back to her Physical era and has John's production stamp all over it - wonderful to hear these two making music together again even if it is John's original track with Olivia's recently added vocal. Angel In The Wings is lovely , something I think ... Read More:

This was Elton John's third LP and stakes a good claim to being his very best. It certainly represents his peak as an albums artist, being a concept album with no singles. The songs are mostly based around themes of the American West, an obsession of lyricist Bernie Taupin at the time, and Elton rose to the occasion with a consistently strong collection of tunes with a predominantly country flavour, citing The Band as a major influence. The American inflections he has always brought to his vocal style have never sounded more convincing or appropriate, and arranger Paul Buckmaster again comes up trumps with sympathetic settings for the songs. The strings are used more sparingly than on Elton's eponymous previous album, with brass more to the fore this time round, although ... Read More:

This is an excellent primer into the career of a country artist whose limited sales invite the description of 'cult artist'. The reason for that status/ categorisation can be heard on bleak, beguiling songs like 'Kathleen' and 'Waiting Around To Die' where Townes Van Zandt's mournful lyrics, sad, sonorous vocals and sparse musical accompaniment sound like a painful, plaintive cry from the heart. Legend: the Best Of Townes Van Zandt is a poignant reminder that country music is much more than line dancing, Dolly Parton and reactionary attitudes.

I bought this cd as its regarded by many as being influential on rock genres that were to follow. While there are a few decent tracks here, the bulk of the album is pretty mundane. I can see where U.S bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd may have been influenced, but 1968 releases by Cream, Moody's, Tull, Zep etc are far superior, both in material and musicianship and would form more of a basis this side of the pond.

Ok for occasional plays hence 3 stars only.

Music : Cardinology
Whether its commercially successful or commercial suicide no one can deny the talent of Ryan Adams. I've seen him at his best around the time of `Heartbreaker', `Gold' and his worst at the gig the day before he fell off the stage in Liverpool and broke his arm and his pissing about to piss of the record company `Rock N Roll' and just recently his reinvigoration with his band The Cardinals which continues where last album Cold Roses left off. Here where Ryan puts the name of the band first before his own you do get a sense of collaboration rather than ego and a sense that the songs wouldn't be as good if all weren't pulling their weight equally, with that said this then is his most accessible songs in ages. They are catchy and fun, emotional without plunging the depth of his `Love is hell' days and musically ... Read More:

240.Z by: My Morning Jacket
October 17, 2005
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Z
Over four albums My Morning Jacket have fashioned a sound that embraces widescreen emotionalism with rootsy Americana, pyschedelia and alt-country. `Z` sees My Morning Jacket broaden their influences while retaining the unifying use of reverb that makes all the songs sound unmistakably them now matter how far they stray from the alt-country template. Recorded in a grain silo or not, veteran producer John Leckie should probably be recognized for maintaining the sultry Kentucky mood while Jim James and co. toy with white boy soul (Wordless Chorus), Clash-style punk-reggae (Off the Record) or stadium power pop (Gideon). MMJ's Phil Spector-esque use of reverb affords a cerain abstraction - even distance - to even their most tangential enterprises, and allows them to sound like them, even when they don't.
