I like to listen to Jerry Anderson on BBC Radio Ulster, he's really funny (although when my English Nephew was visiting he couldn't understand a word anyone on the show was saying) and he plays nice folk music. I heard the song 'village green appreciation society' a few times on his show, and thought it was brill (I don't remember the Kinks version.) I surfed the net to find who sang it, and came across Kate Rusby - what a discovery! I bought this album on the strength of that one track, and have played it nearly to death already. I like all the songs, as well a loving Kate's accent (I spent two years in Leeds when I was at college, and it brings me back to those happy times.) Buy it. Play it. Love it.

Best Helm in years this is rock with goose bumps!Its a long time since I've heard such brilliant vocals, instruments and lyrics plus backing vocals.

Yes, Johnny Cash was obviously ailing when he performed these songs, no, it makes absolutely no difference. The power is there, the sheer aura of the man is there, his outstanding ability to take the simplest song and make it special. Yes, Trent Rezner 'took back' his song 'Hurt' at the Reading Festival but no, he hasn't entirely regained his crown. Johnny Cash's rendition of the song is still heartbreaking. It brought tears the first time I played it. Brilliant album. Buy it. Love it. Treasure it. They don't come better than this.

First of all i'd like to state that i'm not really a Crowell fan , or at least i wasn't. As a fan of all things Country/Americana i'd obviously heard the name Rodney Crowell a lot but i hadn't really checked him out until now. I think i bought a compilation of his 80's stuff a while back but it couldn't have done much for me . Swayed by 4 star reviws in Uncut and Mojo magazines i decided to give this effort a try and , jeez , am i glad .It really is a brilliant album , full of mellow , mature songs , superb lyrics and fantastic music. Top production too by Joe Henry who duets with Rodney on the masterful track about (i think) his daughter , track 6 on the CD . Not much to say seeing as everyone has said it, but this is a brilliant album and has brought me to appreciate jennings and kristofferson (who i had not heard much of before)

I'd never heard of Geraint Watkins till Mark Lamarr played "Unto You" and it stopped me in my tracks. This doesn't happen very often in these days of style over content. I ordered the CD on the strength of this song and I haven't been disappointed. This is a real gem!!!!! Easy to Say and My Love are such joyful tunes that they just make you want to dance. Champion is a gorgeous love song and the brass section gives it overtones of colliery bands and mountains. Unto You is sung with such passion that it brings tears to the eyes. There isn't a "filler " on this CD. The singing , the playing, the music , the arrangements are so coherent and masterful. This CD reminds us that music is transcendent and can make us more than we are.

In the beginning the way into Dylan was via Peter Paul & Mary,the Turtles,the Byrds and Johnny Cash. And commercially electric Dylan was just right. This CD is just a sampler and introduction to the Art of Dylan.If you want more you get the original albums on CD.All but one have been on catalog since CDs began. My favorite Dylan song is Can you please crawl out your window. Thus this double CD would only be of interest if there was a booklet with it and its by no means the only one of its kind as the most recent-titled DYLAN and in 3 different editions -comes with a picture book. Today's Dylan collector needs plenty of money and plenty of room

Listening to Sandy Denny's voice makes you realise how much the music industry short-changes us these days. Sublime and unaffected, young yet embedded with wisdom, it sweeps you away like none of today's wannabes ever will. 'Sandy' also benefits from first class arrangements, production and musicianship, with Richard Thompson and Dave Swarbrick adding valuable guitar and violin respectively. Sneaky Pete contributes some of his best pedal steel playing too, lending a country tinge to some of the tracks. By and large, this is folk at the edge of rock. 'It'll Take A Long Time' is an expansive, epic opening, while Denny's take on 'Tomorrow Is A Long Time' is one of the best Dylan covers you'll hear. martha wainwright proves on this album that despite all of her vaunted background she is a true original. the songs show great craft, especially BMFA which is perfectly written. and her voice is a wonder. it has the flexibility of mary margaret o'hara's voice and the emotional vastness of jane siberry but is also something completely hers. its really exhilirating the way it can just take off in the middle of a song and go wherever it likes yet still make complete musical sense. for many years i've been grieving the fact that mary margaret o'hara hasn't been making music but with this album the gap is filled. but she isn't a copycat. like any true talent this musical vision is completely martha's own. and it seems to have sprung complete from her in ...
