It is time for the nature of music reviews - at least for popular music - to change. There's no need any longer to read a review to help you decide if you want to buy an album. All of these tracks can be heard on various places online - either in part or in full, often in different arrangements, sometimes in video - and the lyrics too are freely available. So you can listen, and read, before you decide whether to buy. The traditional reviewer role of helping you decide whether or not this music will be for you, is redundant. I have practically no interest in Country music with the notable exception of Neil Young's Harvest Moon (which I also consider a masterpiece.) But this magificent effort from the Chicks is one of those albums that totally transcends genres. I consider it the equal of such classics as Metallica's "...And Justice For All", The Mediaeval Baebes' "The Rose", Tori Amos' "Little Earthquakes", A-ha's "Hunting High and Low", Bon Jovi's "7800oF", Dire Straits' "Alchemy Live", Within Temptation's "Mother Earth", The Divine Madness' "Secrets", Def Leppard's "Pyromania", Whitesnake's "1987", Portishead's "Portishead", David Krakauer's "Bubbemeises: Lies my gramma told me", Sabbat's "Dreamweaver" etc etc etc. I could go on. 21 Number Ones I wanted a CD of Kenny's best hits, and this one fitted the bill - almost. The only track it doesn't have is probably his most famous of all - Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town. The other tracks are a delight, especially the duets, and reminds us why we love the husky voice and storyline lyrics of this great man. A great CD to listen to when you're in a quiet mellow mood, perfect for relaxing with a glass of wine - or two!

A great review (as always) from Mark Barry but I have to disagree with the comments regarding DVD Audio. I would guess a large proportion of people whom these types of reissues are aimed at DO have the ability to play high res formats such as DVD-A and SACD. I'm one of those people and i'm pleased that a major label still thinks it's viable to issue archive releases in this format. The standard CD may be good (and it certainly is) but the high resolution version on the DVD-A is absolutely spectacular. I have never heard stereo imaging so accurate and the clarity of each instrument is possibly the best I have experienced on ANY format. This flies in the face of current mastering trends where everything is made artificially loud, destroying all musicality. ... Read More:

This is an extremely well thought out 2-CD collection featuring guitarist Les Paul. The first CD is centred around the mid-forties, when he provided accompaniment, either singly or in a small group, to a number of the vocalists recording for Decca. Amongst them were Bing Crosby, who sings six numbers in a particularly languorous style, plus four from the Philco Radio Hour. Although not reflected in the track listing, "Hey Lolly Lolly Lo" and "I Ain't Gonna Be Treated This Way" were recorded on 21st March 1947, and the second voice that can be heard is that of Burl Ives. They're followed by two each from Helen Forrest, the Delta Rhythm Boys, the Andrews Sisters, and Dick Haymes. Highlight of the set for me is Kay Starr, who contributes ten tracks accompanied ... What the hell is the amazon reviewer listening to - Avalanche aimless? Absolute tosh and nonsense. Great song. The Oasis cover? Redundant. Always skip past it. The rest? absolute bloody genius. Record companies? God bless the internet.
