Following on from his own three mix-albums ('Music to Watch Girls Cry', 'Songs in the Key of Death' and 'One Nation Under a Grave') and the hairy funk of 'Vertigo Mixed', Votel has been commissioned by Far Out Recordings for this Brazilian mix-album. Comprising of tracks from Brazil's Som Livre and RGE labels, Votel has dug deep inside the crates and found some classic 60's & 70's Brazilian psych, acid and fuzzy funk and mixed it together in is own inimitable style. Fans of Brazilian music luminaries such as Os Mutantes (who feature) and Gal Costa, and indeed fans of forgotten & lost psych classics, will find plenty to enjoy here.

I got into Julio Iglesias a couple of years ago after being in Spain. This is the man at his romantic best. You want a recording for a candle light dinner for two ? ... this is it. Buy, you WONT be disappointed.

This is full of really good catchy songs. If you liked the hits Hero, or Escape buy the album, then you will want to buy "7" and "Insomniac" and "Enrique"! I did and they're all very good. This is melodic, emotive writing singing and production. So many good songs, which Enrique co-writes. His voice seems to carry a lot of emotion and feeling. I must say I'm hooked on it, some years after I first heard "Hero" I'll say. Better late than...! Buy it and enjoy. Cheers.

The Beginners Guide series is garnering a reputation for collecting quality tunes in a triple CD set...and BGT Cuba is no exception. The three CDs each cover a different style... CD1 "Classic Cuba' has all the Buena Vista style artists: Compay Segundo, Ibrahim Ferrer, Cunbanismo etc. and there are a few classic tunes that many will know from other sources, but the quality bar is high, with most tunes displaying the easy languid grooves and harmonies we have come to know and love. *** CD2 "Jazzy Cuba' ...says it all...the cuban grooves being a little more subservient to solos and spotlights on individual talents...still exuberant and danceable, but perhaps less of interest to DJs. What do you mean, you don't already own this album? Quick, buy it now, pay for the extra quick delivery. Hurray, because there can't be another day in your life that you don't own this incredible record. Actually, I envy you. You get to hear it for the first time and jump up and down with joy when you realise that music like this really did get made. If you've ever liked late Beatles, early Floyd, Brazilian samba and Californian sunshine pop and wondered what would happen if it were all thrown together...well, here it is. One of my all time top 10 records. Enjoy, my friends. I'm certain you will.

Astrud Gilberto made a name for herself when she fortuitously sang on the 1964 US Top 5 smash "The Girl From Ipanema". This association with jazz and bossa nova godfathers brought her a lot of flak from critics quick to dismiss her "artless singing style" and "limited vocal range". However, to the music listeners who succumbed to her vocal charms - and I sure am one of them - the most important aspect of Astrud Gilberto's singing was her ability to get the most out of everything song she performed. As a bonus, her music greatly benefitted from sumptuous Brazilian cum U. S. orchestrations. For my taste, this is a fabulous record, in the lines of Alma Caribena. Excellent recording fidelity, expert arrangements, beautifull vocals and overall proficient choice of material. Very enjoyable. Get it.
