The Beginners Guide series is garnering a reputation for collecting quality tunes in a triple CD set...and BGT Cuba is no exception. The three CDs each cover a different style... CD1 "Classic Cuba' has all the Buena Vista style artists: Compay Segundo, Ibrahim Ferrer, Cunbanismo etc. and there are a few classic tunes that many will know from other sources, but the quality bar is high, with most tunes displaying the easy languid grooves and harmonies we have come to know and love. ***** CD2 "Jazzy Cuba' ...says it all...the cuban grooves being a little more subservient to solos and spotlights on individual talents...still exuberant and danceable, but perhaps less of interest to DJs. If (like me) you're a fan of Ottmar Liebert, Paco Pena, and other "neo flamenco" artists who play with great passion and also great melody, this disc will probably dissapoint you. It's somewhat traditional but too jazz-like, with aimless tunes, bland arrangements, and no groove.

Street Hassle has the makings of a great album, but essentially it falls short, as the album runs out of steam half way through. Nonetheless its worth a look. Apparently Bowie loved this album, and used to play it before the gigs on his Stage tour in the late 70s. This is not surprising, given that the opener, Gimme Some Good Times, sounds like Lou is ripping Bowie off. Dirt is a classic, though, with Lou's surly vocal and the big, dirty guitar riff, its Lou at his most caustic and musically interesting. I especially like it when he starts drawling Bobby Fuller's "I fought the law and the law won"- very cool. The title track Street Hassle, is a bit over-extended in my opinion, but it has some excellent passages nonetheless. I Wanna Be Black ... Read More:

This CD is a fantastic collection of her biggest hits (yes, it does exclude songs like 'Here We Are' & 'Cuts Both Ways', which are beautiful songs) however, it DOES include 20 classic tracks from her 80's days of Dr Beat, Conga, Don't Wanna Lose You Now, Can't Stay Away From You, Rhythm Is Gonna Get You, etc to her 90's tracks Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Everlasting Love, Heaven's What I Feel & Reach plus her song 'Wrapped' from her highly underrated 2003 beautiful CD ''Unwrapped'' (check it out!). A good album for this new peurto rican rapper. He has only recently broken into the uk thanks to the hit gasolina. It features many more like this. King Daddy is just one of them. All the songs feature great beats and all have a slight hint of latino. A very good album, even if you cant understand any of it.
