Paco is a good friend of mine, so I refrain from comment on the quality of the music or the recording. But here are a couple of notes that I hope will be helpful. London's Wigmore Hall is (somewhat more by accident than design, for it was built at the start of the 20th century) the kindest of all the major London concert halls to the sound of vocal or instrumental soloists, and it has long been the preferred venue of guitarists. The present album is a live recording of a concert given to mark the forty years since Paco's début recital there (a picture of the programme for this being included in the booklet, as are musical and biographical notes). Paolo Conte has been dubbed the "Tom Waits" of Italy but he is much much more than this. With his deep cigarette-grazed voice his songs speak of far-away places as well as his local Caffe. Followed by a full jazz-set, trumpets, saxophone, bandoleone, Paolo Conte fills the air with a wonderful melancholy, a melancholy which recalls cold afternoons huddled in, thinking back on life. This specific album is a nice collection, although it does not contain my ever-favourite song, "Gli Impermeabili"... so between the two Best Of's, I recommend "The Best Of Paolo Conte" released in July 5th, 1999 -

Yo-Yo Ma performs Appassionato with superb technique, and the music on this album is sublime, mystical, sensual, optimistic, gentle and powerful at the same time. A real treat for those who seek an emotional challenge and a profound artistic experience. The more I listen to this CD the more I am astonished by the great selection of the music. It's always such a strong moment when the Cello meets the Oboe in "Gabriel's Oboe" (The Mission) and how they reach for each other and rise together into the most mesmerizing interaction - one is transported to a world of beautiful feelings by this music and how it is played here.
