Mendes's "Fool on the Hill" was one of the first albums that this then fifteen-year-old bought with his allowance. Thus began an almost forty-year love affair with the Brazilian's sound. One can't imagine my excitement when I learned of the release of "Timeless," his first album of new music in over a decade. And what an album it is!!! The disc is an outstanding blend of the old and the new, with cuts to satisfy the contemporary crowd as well as those of us with nostalgia of the soul. Though the album features guest performances from the likes of Justin Timberlake to Jill Scott to John Legend, the best cuts are those that harkens back to the cool 1960's, adding a new dimension with rap and modern rhythms. Like everyone I know, I first heard Julio when on holiday and his voice, even many years later, brings a warm feeling whenever I play his CD and I confess that I play it more than any other single CD I own. Yes, some tracks work better for me than others but this is not just a greatest hits but an ultimate hits copllection. His voice envelopes everything, bringing smooth flowing sound that is pleasing even if you are not listening but rewarding if you are. This collection lifts him to the position of the number one European singer of romantic love songs. I don't have his other CDs - there is no point this is the collection to have. H

This as hands down one of the most astonishing recordings I have ever heard. I bought it knowing a bit about tango, and a bit about Piazzolla, but regardless of that, this is incredible music. The music itself is gorgeous - dark, beautiful, ominous, brooding and deeply passionate. The playing is beyond compare - laser precise and yet at the same time gritty and rough. This is very much a band effort, and what a band - they swing, caress and whip up thunder. Apparently this angered the tango purists in Argentina, as did much of Piazzollas output, and I can see why - this is modern, vital music, with clear influences from jazz, classical music and even the rush of punk. I have just read David Garcia's book "Arsenio Rodríguez: and the transnational flows of Latin Popular music". Luckily, there are now a few original recordings available of this son montuno style master. He was copied by many of the younger salsa performers, like Johnny Pacheco and many others, but was often barred from performing on the major stages. Racism, his own lack of adaptation to the big town up beat tastes, and for other reasons, Rodriguez was forgotten by many. Mirabal's record consists only of Rodriguez' music, which is more subtle, intricate, and challenges the dancers to feel the music, not only the beat of the drums. Read the book, listen to Mirabal, and then go to the source!

This is a fine selection of melodic uplifting music. Such good song writing and production and compelling listening. So get it is my recommendation. And get all his other English albums - I have! And I have found them to be equally as good. Cheers.

Which is exactly what I bought it for. I felt something was missing from my CD collection and it has been filled by a collection of beautiful cuban music. Excellent to chill out to on a hot summery day. You will even probably recognise a few tracks or a few of the hooks from tracks used in todays music or even from a few adverts. Highly recommended.

I don't have time to write reviews, but I am so impressed by this CD that it deserve the reveiw. Almost every song on this CD drives you to the dance floor - absolute essential for every salsa dancer. Excellent value. Don't miss it, buy more than one to keep or to give to friends as a present. The best Salsa CD. Also buy volume 1.
