It is a great shame that Ravi Shankar has been treated to a rash of reissues and cd compilations in recent years. At best it's a pity because his longer concert performances are under-represented in the cd catalogue. The performances on this compilation CD are all from the vinyl age when raga was squeezed down to fit the format, and the result is a loss of the true essence of Indian raga performance. 30 years on, to continue to treat the western market to short performances like this is somewhere between misleading, patronising and exploitatative. The worst crime is that on this cd the live Pancham Se Gara track is actually cut and faded before the climax. Nevertheless there are a couple of good performances ... Read More:

its a proper dance album and has a range of good music, personally i think the tracks on disk 2 could be improved, but hey, overall it was worth buying

It is rare or almost impossible to find ragas written in western notation. This is because most of Indian classical music is based on memorising certain themes and melodies and then improvising on them,and very little seems to get written down. So unless you can play by ear or have access to a teacher , its very difficult to pick up or play raga music alone. The book is extremely useful in that it first lets you hear a particular raga and then give you the notation to be able to play it. I have not come accross anything like this before and is especially aimed at a western audiance. Good book.

Listen to anything remotely resembling pop music these days and you will always find a trace of the formulaic about it. If nothing else, the 21st century has refined pop music into something of a formulaic commodity. Mind you, there are some would argue Mickey Most was doing the same thing back in 1973... Santogold's debut does contain some ambitions to meet some kind of blueprint. Upon first hearing I found it utterly generic - a record in search of a hit, if you like. The sound is clean and somewhat calculated. Then after a few plays the thing reveals something of a little more substance.
