114.Chant by: Cistercian Monks Of Stift Heiligenkreuz
May 19, 2008
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Music : Chant
This Cistercian abbey has a continous history since its foundation. My only criticsm is that according to the Rule Cistercians should chant in the Ambrosian mode - very slow & ponderous, and this CD is a little too fast. One of the plus points is that Cistercians do not have choir boys so the overall effect is a deeper more inspiring chant.

Everybody who was around in the sixties, seventies and eighties in the UK remembers who Val Doonican was - he was a regular on TV, usually hosting his own show in which he would always sing at least one song, often sitting in a rocking chair. But before he established himself as a TV host, he was a singer with a string of UK hits - three top three hits, two other top ten hits, three that came close to the top ten and six minor hits. Ballads were his stock-in-trade but he was not limited to them as he sometimes recorded up-tempo or mid-tempo songs. In the main, he recorded easy listening pop music or covers of soul, country and folk songs adapted to an easy listening pop style but he also recorded some Irish songs too.

This album has to be listened to to be believed. It is simply amazing with more of my favourite songs all on one album. This album was released in 2000 even though Eva died in 1996 of cancer. Unfortunately, the album only reached number 25 in the charts unlike Songbird, Imagine and the most recent American Tune which all reached number 1.

For those that have never heard of Eva, she was an American whose style could never be categorised which proved to be the biggest downfall in her career as no one would sign her unless she was in a specific genre. I would say the style of this album is a little more folk and bluesy than some of her other albums and the tempo is a lot slower in e.g. Anniversary Song than you may find in other songs such as 'How Can ... My sister introduced me to Enya (and has now, for reasons not disclosed, gone off her, but that is another matter.) Having collected all the previous CDs, and either liked or loved them, this one was a "must". In fact, I found it a great let-down: having listened to it once, last Christmas, I have never wanted to listen to it again. I felt it lacked the beauty and invention of the previous records, and I intend to give it away.

This CD is the most boring amateur music I have heard in a long while. The cheesy and predictable melodies sound like a GCSE composition recorded by a school pupil. 10 minutes of listening and I wanted to tear my hair out! A definite miss.
