Anyone considering this box set will most likely already know Pentangle's music. So, no need to mention how wonderful the music is.

However, what is worth mentioning is that Sanctuary reissued this box set in 2008 - and this is the version to get, as the enclosed 60-page booklet is better glued in to the box set and looks like it will not fall apart - a major complaint of the earlier box set version.

This is Karen Matheson's second solo work, much more contemporary and laid back than her earlier (and excellent) 'Dreaming Sea' album. Most of the songs here are sung in english, though Matheson's celtic roots are well-represented in the 2 very stirring gaelic language tracks. What marks this collection is the sheer purity, grace and poise of Karen Matheson's singing voice (always a pleasure to listen to - search 'Capercaillie' for more of her work).

Also outstanding is the quality of all the songwriting, especially by James Grant (ex-Love and Money). His songs are always beautifully crafted, and his guitar playing superb. The backing is provided by some very able musicians, Neil Yates' trumpet-playing and the string arrangements ... Read More:

Fantastic sounds from the 70's revisited. Remember the 3 day working week and the power cuts? This album will bring it all back to you. Having seen Lindisfarne over the years in their Christmas Shows when they reformed, their fun and laughter is encapsulated in some of the songs whilst the haunting melodies of Lady Eleanor evoke memories of musk oil and incense sticks. Beautiful on CD. No longer stuck in the attic on vinyl.

I was persuaded by previous reviews to buy this set. It is literally monotonous - a nice-ish voice but all on one note. There is no depth or colour to it and the only emotion it demonstrates is depression. Also the arrangements are plodding and overblown. That s right, I really didn t like it.

You could argue this is a pretentious waffle of an album but I don't. I can honestly say I'm not a big fan of the Strawbs. I have only one other album of theirs [Bursting at the seams] but Grave New World was a revelation when I first heard it when it came out. So much so that I carefully copied the Strawbs logo complete with fruit and painted it on to my bedroom wall - my dad wasn't too chuffed!
I still play this regularly, whereas BATS gets played for "Part of the Union" and not much else.
GNW's outstanding opening piece - Benedictus - has always been special for me - no particularly esoteric or theological reason other than it's a great tune with wonderful lyrics and for me sums up how you live your life. The rest of the album has some ... Read More:

This is the best single CD introduction to Fairport Convention that you are likely to come across, and covers their golden years from 'What We Did on Our Holidays' through 'Babbacombe Lee' as well as is possible, in my opinion.

Of course, once you have this, you'll probably want to start collecting all the original albums .. even their 'not best of' tracks are generally worth listening to.

This album is a distilled version of 'Who Knows Where The Time Goes' and as such is fantastic value for money as an intro to Sandy Denny, but be warned, the 3 disc box set 'Who Knows Where The Time Goes' is The Definitive (capitals deliberate) collection of her best work and you'd be better off spending the extra money on that.

It's about time this brilliant collection was up there in the best albums of all time lists. Utterly universal music, politically charged, each song a gem and the most brilliant singing and guitar playing. No pretension and affected star-posing. I'm at a loss to understand why this superb work isn't as oft cited as What's Going On and Blood on the Tracks. The gut-wrenching use of Burns' lyrics in Come Westlin' Winds, the righteous lament of The World Turned Upside Down, the delicate sentiments of Erin-Go-Bragh and Both Sides the Tweed and the strident Workers Song. What more do you want?

Anyone who subtitles there LP `The Difficult Third Album' is not building up peoples expectations and although `Taxman' may have been `Difficult' for its author for the listener it is an absolute delight.

The album opens strongly with what would become its second single `Greetings to the New Brunette' with Bragg's aching guitar being complimented by John Porter on Bass and Johnny Marr on guitar (respectively The Smiths producer and guitarist) and backing vocals provided by the late Kirsty MacColl whom had done more for promoting Bragg then anyone else by getting her `Pop' cover of Bragg's `A New England' into the charts. Although many mourned the death of pure `Urban' folk it has to be said that the enthusiasm for a further album of a man shouting over his own urgent ... Read More:
