I have always regarded 'Nine' as being among the best Fairport albums, representing the brief flowering of the post Nicol/Thompson band before the return of Sandy Denny changed the musical direction again. The previous album 'Rosie' was something of a stopgap but had marked the arrival of Trevor Lucas and Jerry Donahue, both former members of Sandy's band Fotheringay, and on 'Nine' they make major contributions. Lucas's rich and resonant voice and Donahue's fluent lead guitar were completely different from their predecessors, Sandy Denny and Richard Thompson, but they gave a distinctive tone to a revitalised and cohesive musical unit built on the sure foundation of the three Daves. This is a nice mellow album, it is not enhanced by the presence of Beverley Martyn. John was wise to go it alone after this, because Bev can't sing, she hasn't got a very good voice. Otherwise an enjoyable edition to the Martyn Canon.

Someone wrote thet their previous album "The Hangmans Beautiful Daughter" was a conventional folk album... for the first 15 seconds. I dont know that this album manages even that. Its hard now to convey the impact they had back then but this album remains a staggering achievement of musical inventiveness and lyrical intelligence.
The themes here are in a very broad sense religious or perhaps spiritual is more accurate and the tone is impassioned, a tad confused, searching and dont forget humour... and doesnt that sum up life really? Who else could combine musing on the Crucifixion with quotes from Groucho Marx. No blasphemy here - just compassion and wisdom about this trap we`re all in. And there they went making music to uplift, question ... Read More:

Donovan is simply one of those genius singer sonwriters who kept producing wonderful, evocotive and beautifully realised songs but was also a brilliant interpreter of other peoples songs. Here he is on top form. He took a step back from the mainstream pop oreientated music with which he had become associated. That is not the devalue any of that work, it is wonderful too, however, this is a perfectly realised Donovan album that exudes a towering writing and performing confidence. The songs here are as fresh as the day they were written.

For many people this is the peak of Donovans career, however, I believe that he went on to record many more wonderful albums. I would advise anyone who is at all interested in this great artist to check out any ... Read More:

This is a wonderful album of Charles Wesley's hymns - sung in a folky fashion, most likely much as they were originally sung. So refreshing a change from the usual rendering of church hymns. Very uplifting indeed

"Mellow Yellow" was Donovans's second electric album, and his second produced by Micky Most. To call the album electric is probably a little misguiding, as many tracks are almost pure acoustic recordings; but compared to Donovan first two albums these songs are arranged with a great variety of instruments. Though Donovan is covering quite many different styles ( blues, jazz, folk, classical and pop ) the album works very well as a whole; a fact that arranger John Cameron deserves credit for. His arrangements are both tasteful and varied, creating the atmosphere that makes an album.

The list of guest musician features both classical players and well-known studio musicians like John Paul Jones, Harold McNair and Phil Seamen.

The extremely catchy ... Read More:

of Elvis Costello, Billy Bragg, Richard Thompson and Jerry Garcia songs...and was not dissapointed. Norma's version of God Loves A Drunk is, in my opinion, better than Richard Thompson's himself!
With a great line-up of backing musicians (including Danny and Richard Thompson) this album is a quietly beautiful folk album comparable with the very best of June Tabor.

Wonderful early release of the Cieftains work. Brought back some great memories of childhood living in Southern Ireland 20 years ago.
I am collecting all their work when I can afford it. It lifts the spirits and placates the soul.
The quality is all that can be expected from such an early recording (originally on LP record), but can be improved upon with a good CD player. Highly recommend this CD.

Don't be deterred by the rather dreary black and white photo of Sandy Denny on the cover - this album is full of top quality, often quite beautiful, music from one of Britain's most distinctive and memorable female singers. Though the album is described as 'an introduction to Sandy Denny', this seems too modest; 'very best of' would not be an inappropriate title. It features around four tracks from each of her four solo albums, which were recorded between 1971and 1977, in the years after leaving the influential folk-rock group Fairport Convention. Every track is of high quality, with crystal clear remastered sound, and the collection succeeds in picking much of the best material from these solo albums.Although on some tracks the music is typical of the well-loved Island Records ...
