I bought this CD based on the rave reviews it had received and because there was such a long list of songs. However the style of the music is not quite what i was expecting. I am no music buff but the style of the singing is more Irish folk/light opera music than jolly children's music. The words of some songs are not very clear and hard to sing along to. Also, the music sounds quite samey due to the style of the two singers. If you are a music pro this might be for you but if, like me, you wanted something simple and jolly to entertain your child and sing along to this is not the right CD.

This is a lovely album . Warm songs gently spun in the cold Scottish air, created by a modest yet extremely talented tunesmith.
James Yorkston has the look of bank clerk on his day off. Not for him the razamatazz of show-biz. Instead,James of the wooly jumper and faded cords lets his music do the talking for him and weaves some memorable tales torn straight from the heart.
As part of Fife's 'Fence Collective'. James has been one of their most successful ambassadors. Becoming a minor cult figure on the folk music circuit and attracting a new legion of admirers through his appearence on the FC feature on BBC2's 'Culture Show' where daffy dame Laura Lavigne confessed her devotion to the music of JY.
Every track on the album is ... Read More:

Having been blown away by the first three albums, unlike the reviewer above I was terribly disappointed with 'Ghost of a Rose'. There are some great moments on it, but the melodies are blander and weaker over all and the tracks less infectious than on previous (and subsequent) albums. Several of the tracks almost get somewhere great but not quite - which is a shame and a bit frustrating as I can see that this album could have been great.
Having said that, the title track is perfect (and better than the curiously re-recorded version on 'Beyond The Sunset') and 'Cartouche' and 'Loreley' are certainly worth buying the album for if nothing else.
I still enjoy it and play it, but it's always an 'almost' great album...

This was Sandy Denny's third solo-album. On her second album, the much acclaimed "Sandy", she had begun a slow departure from her folk-music roots. On this album you probably would not have thought of there being any folk-roots at all, if it had not been for her backing band consisting of people with strong roots in Britsih folk-rock - people like Richard Thompson, Dave Pegg, Dave Mattacks, Jerry Donahue, Gerry Conway, Pat Donaldson and several more.

Sandy and her husband/producer Trevor Lucas were seeking a broader approach with a wider range of styles, using heavier production; often with use of strings; which some people thought a progress, and other people hated.

The opener, the gorgeous "Solo" is one of Sandy's very ... Read More:

What can one say that has already been said by others about the master of electric contemporary folk other than this is album is truly superb with the normal underpinning of RT's gravely voice and incredible mastery of the guitar in his laid back style.

From the opening chords of "Gethsemane" to the closing bars of Happy Days and Old Lang Syne" this album delights not only because one can appreciate the skills of RT and his backing musicians but also because the lyrics of this album make one think throughout.

Listen to the anti fundamentalist polemic of "Outside of the Inside" to songs about lost loves such as "One Door Opens" to "First Breath" As normal with RT he tends to concentrate on what has been lost rather than what ... Read More:

Music : The Best of the Pogues
`The Best of the Pogues' was the sixth album released by The Pogues and marked a watershed for the band. They had sacked founder, principal songwriter and lead singer Shane MacGowan and the album was intended as a end of an era before their projected renascence.

With no lead singer they promoted the album by touring with Joe Strummer and showcased a hybrid of both Clash and Pogues classics. It made a surprisingly pleasant cocktail but failed to promote an album driven by Shane MacGowan.

As a compilation album released whilst vinyl was still the primary media it has many omissions due to length and anyone locking for a full compliment of Pogues classics would be advised to purchase either the later `The Very Best of the Pogues' ... Read More:

I've just googled Bobby's name after listening to his lovely voice again on the Collected burns CDs, and read about his death three years ago. What a loss. His versions on these 5 hand reel discs of songs like Red red rose, ae fond kiss, Carrickfergus, Earl of Moray...are just utterly utterly beautiful. He really should have recorded a lot more. A great Scottish voice.

If you're looking at this review to find out if this is a reliable purchase then I think the track selection on this is excellent - better than the more recent "Anthology". For anyone really wanting the best I think it covers the essential John Martyn from Island. I find myself playing disc one most - the earlier stuff. John Martyn was initially a folkie and later became more of a rocker.

I first bought this in 1976 after seeing the Chieftains on the same bill as Freddie King and Eric Clapton !That day they had a profound effect on me as does this album. It is a collection of tunes beautifuly played by musicians who both care and love the music they are playing. There are no bad tracks,my personal favourites being "Drowsy Maggie","Morning Dew" and "Mna Na Eirrean".Whenever I hear the last track I am transported back to my native Ireland. A wonderful Irish album stunningly executed....and if youre ever in Clifden Paddy Malloys pub is equally as special ! Now whatever happened to that Eric Clapton fellow ?
