This is imaginative, free-spirited rock music at its very best. It sits alongside 'Stormcock' as Roy Harper's trio of classic lps (I'd have the live set 'Flashes From Archives Of Oblivion' as the third). It carries the same lyrical, musical and mystical weight as Pink Floyd's 'Wish You Were Here' - released in the same year. I'd give Roy Harper the edge here for the purity of the intention behind this work. An intention that is realised. Very well done, Mr Harper.

I absolutely adore this album. It has to be one of my favourite albums of all time. Admittedly I only came to Strawbs in 1998 (when the first batch of remastered CDs hit the market) but I feel i've known this album for many more years.
Elegant, emotional and enlightening - I can't describe it any fairer than that. It is hard for me to pick any particular song here that stands out. They all do. Lady Fuschia, Tears & Pavan and The Winter & The Summer are all bursting (sorry for the pun) with feeling. I escape to a better place when playing this album.

There's something quintessentially British about this album. I was in Luton airport in about 2001, about to fly off to Strasbourg to work for a few weeks. I was feeling a bit apprehensive (never worked abroad before), I was in the tail end of a long relationship, I felt I was stepping into the unknown. I felt a bit lost, to say the least. Then this album came over the PA system (yes! at Luton airport, believe it or not.) I went straight to the record shop (there in the terminal!) and bought it. It kept me sane during the next few weeks and has been a loved possession ever since. Thank you, Kathryn! I treasure this album and would recommend it to anyone. It's HOME.

I don't often feel moved to comment on albums, but if you're even vaguely interested in folk guitar, get this. At four quid, it's a steal, and worth it for She Moved Thru' the Bizarre/Blue Raga alone. Other commentators have pointed out some minor blemishes, but the playing is absolutely wonderful...

All the lads were listening to Black Sabbath... but one of the GIRLS kept inflicting this album upon us- and I became encaptivated. What an absolutely fabulous discovery! I'd never heard anything quite like it before and I know for many it is Steeleye's finest album. The musical balance, recording quality and vocal harmonies are absolutely RIGHT.
"Misty Moisty Morning" has always seemed feeble in concert compared to this tight and melodic original version. Same with "Alison Gross" Sharp and disciplined. Elsewhere, Tim Hart's tremendous and unique vocal style on "Bold Poachers"
There simply isn't anything poor on the album. If you think "Bloody Men" is a five star album.. go listen to this and then write your review.

Nick Drakes music is sublime but you probably know that already.
The best way of hearing great music in the home is via top quality vinyl through a top quality system. Sadly, however, this shoddy vinyl release misses the mark completely. This vinyl edition is far from audiophile.
There is excessive surface noise and the sound lacks clarity. Do not buy this, buy the new 200g Japanese editions of 5 Leaves Left or Bryter Later as they sound fantastic. Even the CD edition of Treasury sounds better than this!

I've got these albums separately, 'Rainmaker' containing a few bonus tracks that aren't on this twofer. Even so, this is a great value item. 'Rainmaker' is Chapman's 1969 debut and consists of a mixture of the singer accompanying himself with his distinctive and imaginative acoustic guitar playing, group numbers and the odd instrumental. The sound is a bit rough compared with 'Fully Qualified Survivor,' which is a classic in its own right and is the superior album. Whereas the production on 'Rainmaker' tends to compress and merge the layers of sound, 'Survivor' seems so clear and expansive.
As far as the tracks themselves are concerned, 'Rainmaker' opens with the outstanding 'It Didn't Work Out' which builds relentlessly to a tumultuous climax. Chapman ... Read More:

The true story of John "Babbacombe" Lee, the man they couldn't hang is the stuff of folk legend. Lee was dubiously sentenced to death in 1885 for the inconclusive murder of his landlady Emma Keyes in Babbacombe near Torquay. Three times at the scaffold the bolt was jolted but the trap door didn't open. Lee's capital sentence was commuted to life imprisonment where he served 23 years before being released to tell his amazing tale. Dave Swarbrick of Fairport Convention found a copy of Lee's papers in a Ware antique shop and was suitably inspired by his story to make it the theme of the band's next long-player.

Babbacombe Lee the LP covers John Lee's life from his youth to the hanging incident. It is folk-rock with the playing (and singing in particular) ... Read More:

This was the first live album released by Fairport and dates from the period between the release of "Nine" and "Rising for the Moon" when Sandy Denny was performing with the band again but before she formally rejoined them. There is so much archive live and back-catalogue material available from Fairport these days that my first reaction to this remastered reissue was to note it, but not to rush ahead and buy it. Eventually I took the plunge and was very pleasantly surprised by what I heard - this is a classic set that benefits from the remastering treatment.

The original 1974 album contained nine tracks, recorded at three venues - the Rainbow Theatre (London), Fairfield Hall (Croydon) and the Sydney Opera House, although it is not revealed which tracks originate ... Read More:
