Intended to be his last recording. It wasn't - and quite rightly too. Anyone who can produce this quality of music has got no business retiring! A mixture of material ranging from traditional to Jacques Brel, passing through Richard Thompson and Ewan MacColl on the way. Different people will have their own favourites. Fo me highlights include RT's 'Beeswing' and Graham Moore's 'Tom Paines Bones'.

"Cooltide" was Martyn's 2nd album for Permanent Records and was issued to a largely indifferent public on 9 September 1991. Its long, funky and often soulful tracks were mature - and I loved it from the moment I heard "Hole In The Rain" and the hypnotically magical "Jack The Lad". "Cooltide" was unfortunately also typical of so many Martyn LPs in the 80's and 90's - superb in places and dull-as-dishwater in others. But my God, when he was good, he was untouchable. And of course - he had and still has - that voice - sexy and soothing at one and the same time. A wonder in itself. On Billy Bragg's previous album `Talking to the Taxman about Poetry' he had moved away from the sparse percussive guitar of his early `Urban' folk music using the occasional acoustic and also guest musicians playing piano, bass and even percussion, here things move on again with majority of the songs now being garnished with accompaniment up to and including drums. It was a staggering move towards `Pop' music and with the subject matter made for an absolute classic LP. Although never one to enjoy other people's misfortunes it has to be said that Bragg's then relationship coming to an end was one of the best things to ever happen to my record collection. I bought this after having watched a short documentary on TV about Kathryn which I enjoyed, and having been in Northumberland the previous year for a short vacation, I decided to buy this CD. To be honest, I'm not so keen on the whole, although the standard of mucisianship is good throughout. I expect fans would enjoy it though. Just not my cup of tea!

I was going to say almost the same as the previous (1) review. The Best of Ralph was to come after this collection. I you want a real in-depth collection buy the "The Journey" the 4 cd box set. it;s brilliant and so is the sound1 failing that look out for "Silver Celebration" released in 1992. It's a pretty fair representation up to that year but then again his finest album was to come in 1995 "Sand in your Shoes".

This album presents a very well chosen range of John's masterful acoustic guitar. Solo instrumentals,duets and work with his former band Pentangle are included, making it the perfect introduction for those unfamilliar with his songs. Highlights include a beautiful arrangement of the old blues song "can't keep from crying" in a folk style. To call it a best of is somewhat misleading as this artist has many fine pieces in his repetoire that span a range of genres. I see it more as an overview that displays the range of John's talents. I have played this for many friends and everyone seems to find something they like. So at this price a bargain.
