51.The Very Best Of The Pogues by: The Pogues
March 12, 2001
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Music : The Very Best Of The Pogues
Released as The Pogues first started their now annual Christmas tours this album is, as the wrapper proclaims, `The Very Best of The Pogues'.

Not as complete as a full compliment of the original five Pogues albums or the two volume `best of/rest of' compilations it is a perfect introduction to one of the greatest bands to ever stand up, or even fall over, on stage.

Although omissions are easy to spot `Thousands Are Sailing' and `The Repeal of the Licensing Laws' being obvious, it does contain `The Band Played Waltzing Matilda' and so what we loose on the swings we gain on the roundabouts. Not that you can loose with this album, everyone a winner. If you don't own any Pogues albums, buy this one, you won't regret it. ... Read More:

Born on the eastern outskirts of Glasgow at Stobhill Hospital in 1943 and brought up in north Edinburgh, Bert Jansch is perhaps an unlikely practitioner of the type of folk music you hear on Jack Orion.

Billy Connolly's "Winchburgh Junction" or The Corries' "Sound Of The Pibroch" this assuredly isn't. The Jimi Hendrix of the acoustic guitar? Maybe, but I think the Juan Atkins of the acoustic guitar would be more like it. Ghosts probably dance to this music in the ether.

Seven of the eight tracks are traditional songs, but Jansch has breathed a new and hypnotic life into them. Unlike anti-folk, alt-folk or whatever you get these days, Jansch's renditions of these songs have a mediumistic quality that is almost uncanny. ... Read More:

`Rum, Sodomy and the Lash' was Winston Churchill's famous description of the British Royal Navy and somehow suits the album down to the ground. The album its self is a masterpiece and certainly The Pogues most perfect and fully realised album, perfectly portraying their fantastic live performances of this period, the height of Shane MacGowan's song writing and there most inventive reinterpretation of traditional folk music.
Of the Shane MacGowan originals the singles `Sally MacLennane' and `A Pair of Brown Eyes' were obvious choices but `The Sick Bed of Cuchulainn' `Billy's Bones' and `The Old Main Drag' are equally accomplished songs. Only the instrumental `Wild Cats of Kilkenny' smack of filler.

The choice and arrangement of the majority of ... Read More:

This album and Mellow Yellow saw Donovan at his peak. The jazzy arrangements by John Cameron developed a new sound for him that unfortunately was not sustained afterwards. The best songs on this CD show his artistic peak. The first (title) track does good enough service as a hit single warm-up, Legend of Girl Child Linda is long and veers slightly too near the twee side, but after that the album hits its stride with a succession of masterpieces. Distinctive arrangements - jazzy strings (Bert's Blues), guitars electric and acoustic, & sitars that actually work musically (the trancy Fat Angel). Rhythms hit a slow groove (Season of the Witch; Fat Angel), Sound textures luxuriate (Guinevere, Celeste). If you want to try out Donovan - this would be the place ... Read More:

This album has only been released officially in South Korea and it was very hard do get. It's now remastered with a exellent booklet written by Mark Powell. The sound quality is very good indeed and one wonders why it took so long to release one of the best albums by The Strawbs. All's well that ends well!

The album is a more striped down affair if you compare it to their first album. Tony Visconti's production give a more pastoral feeling than any other album made by the band, and it sounds a bit like Nick Drakes first album. There is no "stand out tracks" on the album, since all the songs, written mostly by Dave Cousins, is of highest standard, but if I have to pick a few favorites it will be "Another Day", "I Turned my Face ...", "Josephine" and the ... 1) She's part of folk royalty (if you didn't know) - her dad is Martin Carthy, her mum is Norma Waterson (both legends in their own right), her aunt and uncle are Lal and Mike Waterson and Oliver Knight is her cousin!
2) She can't half play the fiddle.
3) She has one of the most beautiful voices you'll ever hear, and she can really sing, I mean, really. I saw her live and the first song she did accapella... gobsmacking. And she's from Yorkshire! What more do you want?!
4)Her versatilty. Some of her songs are thigh-slappingly folktastic but then you get songs like Stumbling On, which is more or less jazz, or Billy Boy, which starts of sounding almost like dub reggae, goes folky and then has a Santana-ish guitar solo. And it's not just genre that changes: ... Read More:

All Around My Hat is Steeleye's best-known album by far. Perhaps it was the input from Mike Batt that so firmly established this album as a winner and put Steeleye Span on the map, and this has led a suprising number of people to turn against Mike Batt and to label All Around My Hat as a 2nd class album boosted only by its fame. I say that this is unfair!
What people have to bear in mind is that this album, while maybe not their best, shows Steeleye Span at their peak; it's just an all round great album. The title track is without doubt one that sticks in your head, its main flaw is probably the fact that fans of Steeleye Span will have heard it so often that it's rather lost its appeal. Is this a problem? No!
Black Jack Davey is definitely one of Steeleye Spans ... Read More:

I met an old girlfriend after a five year gap,we had completely forgotten each other, yet within ten seconds she told me she had a partner, even though the old magic was there, we were now doing almost the same job, and she had clients in the block where I work.I called her office, had a quick chat, to no immediate avail...so I listened to "I once had a sweetheart" on repeat for about five hours, and it helped, so the album get's five stars.
