1) She's part of folk royalty (if you didn't know) - her dad is Martin Carthy, her mum is Norma Waterson (both legends in their own right), her aunt and uncle are Lal and Mike Waterson and Oliver Knight is her cousin!
2) She can't half play the fiddle.
3) She has one of the most beautiful voices you'll ever hear, and she can really sing, I mean, really. I saw her live and the first song she did accapella... gobsmacking. And she's from Yorkshire! What more do you want?!
4)Her versatilty. Some of her songs are thigh-slappingly folktastic but then you get songs like Stumbling On, which is more or less jazz, or Billy Boy, which starts of sounding almost like dub reggae, goes folky and then has a Santana-ish guitar solo. And it's ... Read More:

First off I would not call myself a fan of the acid folk scene of the early 70's. After hearing this perhaps it is my loss and i shall be checking similar items out in future. I came to this cd as one of the Amazon recommendations due to other items purchased. The reviews were universally good and having an interest in the avant garde side of music i decided to take a chance. From the first listen I knew this was a masterpeice. Descriptions can always be misleading but some other reviewers here have done fair justice to it. If you are a fan of say Captain Beefheart, Danielle Dax, Nick Cave etc then this may be the long lost gem you've been searching for. Truly inspirational.

All Around My Hat is Steeleye's best-known album by far. Perhaps it was the input from Mike Batt that so firmly established this album as a winner and put Steeleye Span on the map, and this has led a suprising number of people to turn against Mike Batt and to label All Around My Hat as a 2nd class album boosted only by its fame. I say that this is unfair!
What people have to bear in mind is that this album, while maybe not their best, shows Steeleye Span at their peak; it's just an all round great album. The title track is without doubt one that sticks in your head, its main flaw is probably the fact that fans of Steeleye Span will have heard it so often that it's rather lost its appeal. Is this a problem? No!

66.Heydays by: Tim Hart, Maddy Prior

A re-issue of three albums from 1968-1971: Folk Songs of Olde England Vols. 1 & 2 and Summer Solistice. Just Tim & Maddy on the first two, some extra instrumentalists (Gerry Conway, Andy Irvine...) on the third.

Overlook the dreadful 'Olde' - probably used at the behest of the recording company's marketing department. This is an oustandingly good collection of 39 traditional songs, simply arranged and brilliantly sung (with relatively few embellishments) both by Maddy Prior and Tim Hart.

Dificult to pick favourites - there are so many. I 'll just mention The Dalesman's Litany and Capt. Weddebourn's Courtship as sticking in the mind.

I met an old girlfriend after a five year gap,we had completely forgotten each other, yet within ten seconds she told me she had a partner, even though the old magic was there, we were now doing almost the same job, and she had clients in the block where I work.I called her office, had a quick chat, to no immediate avail...so I listened to "I once had a sweetheart" on repeat for about five hours, and it helped, so the album get's five stars.

I recently bought this album, a true tour de force of Richard Thompsons Capitol years and capital years. My major complaint was it was not long enough. A two CD collection would have been better. While the two tracks from "Amnesia" are brilliant I would have liked to see "Yankee Go Home" at least on this collection. I must admit I have lost touch a lot with Richard Thompson, previous to Amnesia the last album I bought was on Polydor, called "Across a Crowded Room" and I was really disappointed with it. I think that was his first solo album after his break-up with Linda and it really reflected that.

On the strength of this album I may invest in some more of the Capitol albums, perhaps making "Rumour and Sigh" my first venture.

If you want to make an entry into medieval music, stop looking & buy this.

I listen to this disc all the time. It is beautifully performed with great feeling by obviously-skilled artists. If you want an introduction to what was heard long ago, this is a fantastic starting point.

Why does Amazon attribute this to Bert Jansch? If ever you were looking for an inspired collaboration of two equal partners, then surely this delivers the goods. More than forty years on and it still gives me shivers. I have several versions of 'Goodbye Pork Pie Hat' and this version stands with the best of them. 'Stepping Stones' continues to make me wince with delight, though I must have heard it a hundred times. And 'After the Dance' always leaves me wanting more. John Renbourn came up, less than two years later, with 'Sir John Alot Of Merrie Englandes Musyk Thyng And Ye Grene Knyghte', surely one of the most cringemaking titles ever contrived but also a seminal and utterly brilliant album which I still rank amongst my top ten of all time. Virtually simultaneously, ... Read More:
