I completely agree with Rab in all but one respect. Hokey-Pokey in fact came between Bright Lights and Pour down like silver.
Never Again, I have read, came from the time of Fairports crash in 1969 and is in memory of Jeannie Franklin killed in that crash.

Nick Drake's been with me since I found Northern Sky on El Pea. I like Pink Moon best but those scumbags from Volkswagen and Brad Pitt ruined it for me. The strings don't do it for me like they did for Arthur Lee. Plus Joe Boyd's arrogance, decrying the fact that he named his production company after a Donovan record. Donovan is up there with the greats as far as I'm concerned, what does Joe Boyd know? Then I read about what a pothead Nick Drake was and I always equate heavy drug use with stuffing feelings back down. It disappointed me. ANYWAY, I thought I'd left him behind till I bought this on a whim off some Arfur-esque character on Ebay who sent me a tatty copy of this CD and I spent this morning in the company of this lovely lovely man. For me this is a more acomplished album than L&L by the Fairports. I know that said album came first by about two years, but the real spirit of English folk music is summed up by the stuff on this album. I must admit I purchased this with some misgivings. If I'm honest I wasn't sure that Shirley Collins with an amplified backing band would work. In reality I should not have worried - because it most definitely does.

There's nothing slick or refined about the songs here. They have a ragged, woosy, English charm, which is insightful and charming. As you will see from the cover there is a cast of thousands here. The likes of Ashley Hutchings, Nic Jones, John Kirkpatrick, Mady Prior et al, are all here and playing together ensemble for the ... Read More:

74.Streets of London: the Best of Ralph Mctell by: Ralph McTell

Music : Streets of London: the Best of Ralph Mctell
I was going to say almost the same as the previous (1) review. The Best of Ralph was to come after this collection. I you want a real in-depth collection buy the "The Journey" the 4 cd box set. it;s brilliant and so is the sound1 failing that look out for "Silver Celebration" released in 1992. It's a pretty fair representation up to that year but then again his finest album was to come in 1995 "Sand in your Shoes".

i am new to this record but by no means new to great pickin guitarists and blues singers and folkies such as davey graham, the jansch, john renborn etc... i am rather shocked and angry that i didnt own this album a good 20 years ago. its absolutley fantastic. it reaLLy haS EVERYTHING... wry humour verging on the darkest humour..."the gardeners"...absolutely mind boggling picking/guitar work..a beautiful tone in the voice...nicely simply recorded...the flute can seem twee at times but...it was 1968..but at least theres no beatnik throttling a sitar.
i agree all around with the others here. "seven black roses" is phenomanal....excuse my spelling i am too excited...the picking so fast and staunchly rhythmic that, solid i mean, that he does the job of a drummer... ... Read More:

I wouldn't exactly call myself a 'folkie' but have always had an interest in traditional music. This was one of my first folk albums, and it was a great start to my growing collection. Both Maddy Prior & June Tabor are first rate artists and hearing them sing together is priceless. Both have such unique voices and there is that magic where it all just blends together. I never tire of listening to this, especially 'Somewhere Along the Road' - it's just beautiful.

All the recent Martyn remasters have come up a treat. It's amazing how much care was put into those albums - says so much about Island, and its quality control in the 70's.
If you only have 3 of his albums (you need more than one to get the idea of the man's talent), I'd suggest this one, Solid Air and Grace & Danger.
One minor gripe - I'm almost positive that the correct version of Dealer (as it appeared on the original vinyl) is version #2 on cd2 - the intro on the version that appears on cd1 is way too short.

In is only of recent times that I got to know about this band and what a surprise. They were contemporaries of the beatles and yet they are so little known. Their songs are full of great lyrics with many twist in the accompanying musical score. The Scottish influence shows through and they can be described as early pioneers in world music with daring to be different. Take the time to listen to the lyrics one time, they are really interesting!

this is by far my favourite john martyn album. recored when he was just 18 in 1968 - this is johns first album - and some say its a straight folk record - i however, deem it to be simple in theory and beautiful in practise. the gorgeous guitar tunings and slick but thoughtful guitar playing, accompanied by johns raw, melodic vocals make this a truely sublime album.
i'd recommend this album for anyone who likes the work of nick drake, bob dylan et al - ...actually, i'd recommend it to everyone.
it's amazing how many more wonderful albums john has made with his first being such a stonker.
enjoy :-)

If you're looking for John Martyn beyond Solid Air, this is a great place to start. As well as glorious versions of some of that album's songs, there are some good ways to get a foot into the door of his other work. Just sit back and enjoy the magnificent aural landscapes of a flawed genius.
