I have been immersed in traditional folk song and dance all my relatively short life (23yrs to be precise) and i can safely say that Penguin Eggs is one of, if not the best example of the genre that exists. Nic was and is such an inspiration for myself and numerous others, and this is album is just a fraction of what he achieved, but one listen and your life will be changed forever!

Highly recommended, a true legand.

Not a review as such, but was not First light the final Richard and Linda Thompson album. It was also a very good one, as I am sure this one is.

I love the voice, the tunes, the backing vocals and instrumentation.

I REALLY love the Yorkshire accent - one of my pet hates is UK performers singing with US accents.

But I just thought the theeing and thouing was a bit overdone. I got the impression Kate probably has a mild Yorkshire accent, which she puts on overdrive when she's singing, and that, plus the overdone folksy, Victorian feel to the album can start to grate after a while.

There's been a lot said about 'mockney' media figures, and maybe Kate's the Yorkshire equivalent - Morkney?

Still, the music and the voice are great, and I look forward to hearing more, with a slightly toned down and updated accent.

Alan Hull was definitely a geezer who died before his time. Despite the fact that Lindisfarne (arguably) became a straitjacket for his talents, 'Pipedream', his first solo album released in 1973, is a tremendous collection. He could pen a tune, and even the instrumental track - STD 0632 - a homage to the-then telephone dialing code for Newcastle - is somehow a moving eulogy to the North East England of his birth. Elsewhere, there's 'Song For A Windmill', an acoustic delicacy of winning melodic charm, and 'United State of Mind' is a mordant, introspective rumination that's worthy of 'On The Beach' era Neil Young. 'Drug Song' - note the bald frankness of the song title - is likewise a strong candidate for the album's best. Even the 'life on the road' song, ... Read More:

These songs have stood the test of time and remain fresh. Sunny Goodge Street is surely one of the top ten tracks from the 60's and perfectly evokes the atmosphere at that time - the lyrics are sheer poetry, as are they on most of these songs. Take Turquoise, 'Your smile beams like sunlight on a gull's wing ' - was there ever a finer line in a love song?

Not all the songs are Donovan's own compositions, but he makes them sound his own. His innovative guitar style, although still in its early stages of development, is well represented, particularly on Josie, Candy Man and Colours - the influence this was to have on pop music is immeasurable, notably on the Beatles.

A fine CD - the most fun you'll ever have for this price. Highly recommended. ... Read More:

The Pogues third album was released early 1988 after `Fairytale of New York' made them the toast of the World Christmas 1987. More consistent in arrangement than the previous two albums `Red Roses for Me' and `Rum, Sodomy and the Lash' it suffers slightly from the polished production which diminishes some of the `Ragged Glory' they were unleashing night after night in concert.

The role of traditional Irish music is on the decline on this album being limited to a medley early in the second side of the original disc. Rather than necessarily be a policy decision it was possibly more down to the standard of song Shane MacGowan was writing at this stage. As well as `Fairytale of New York' and the title track `Turkish Song of the Damned', `Bottle of Smoke', `Sit ... Read More:

Time's not been kind to Donovan, his recordings still left alone by the very generation (ie the new alt-folk movement) which should have been enjoying him. Maybe it's an image-thing, with him never recovering credibility after the cruel savaging by his Bobness on Don't Look Back, and Donovan always seeming to present himself in the last-fashion-but-one; the Dylan cap long after Lennon threw his away, those terrible, hippy/faux-Eastern frocks from 1969...and perhaps, like Nick Drake, he should have died looking Beautiful and Tragic. Whatever the case, to listen to these early recordings (most of them made when he was only 18 or 19) is a real surprise. They're fresh and beautifully played, and with nothing fake or added in (and incidentally, contrary to received wisdom, owe more ... Read More:

I brought this on in my quest for finding music that would inspire me when I'm writing or drawing and believe me, it hasn't disappointed. I'd heard of Clannad for a very long time but only now do I realise how great they are and why I should have found them a long time ago!

This is a wonderful 'introduction' CD to the band. Some of the tracks, most of the more 'pop' type ones with guitars and the duets aren't to my taste. I much prefer the more Celtic and haunting songs such as 'Theme From Harry's Game' (a song I didn't even realise that was by Clannad! Derrr!!!) and most of the tracks later on the CD. However, that's just me and overall the CD is very enjoyable and very relaxing!

A must by if you are just discovering the Clannad, if you already have a 'best ... Read More:

Ok let's get the guest star issue over with first.

Yes they are wyrdy beardie folkies but speaking as one who loves the lysergic twist this is not a bad thing. Beth Orton has a modicum of beatastic fame and has come out the other side relatively unscathed. The Espers crew know how to spook things up deliciously. Love that Cello. Devendra is just Devendra and keeps things mellow, So far so wyrd,

All of this frippery obviously keeps young Bert atuned to the contempoary ether because this is a fine album. The title song is the best one here; it is a belter and stands in my top 5 Bert tunes (I accept I have not heard all of 304 odd or something but a fair smatterring over the years.) Anyway the hairs on my neck tell me it's a goody.

As regards the vocals ... Read More:

This had to be one of the all time best Kate Rusby albums. It has fantastic songs and a lot of them are either fast and memorable, or slower but at the same time catchy. All the tracks on this CD are actually very well done, but the best ones have to be:

Sir Eglamore - it's a song about a dragon. Who couldn't love that? It had a really good sort of repeating line as well, that keeps the tune going and adds to the overall flavour of the track.

Radio Sweethearts - A sweet old tune about an old couple waltzing to a radio. You would think that it would be slow and set to a waltz it self, but it goes at a medium pace and has a veyr nice little melody to it!

I Am Stretched On Your Grave - Based on an old poem, this is by far the best song on the album. It's ... Read More:
